Milifstyle wrote about expanding information in your personal profile to include a zone - his is stated as zone 10 - I do not understand the system or how you determine which zone you are in. Can someone please explain this to me? I know about climatic zones such as tropical or temperate but the numbers have me befuddled. Please help.

I don't use the zone system either. Someone else can explain it better than me, but basically it's a map of zones in each country presumably based on climate) that tells you something about what plants grow there eg x plant grows well in zones 3, 4, 5.

Is it something taught in Pc? I was never sure how useful it was as I don't really know anyone in NZ that uses it. I know it's used in the US more.

    Re: Zones ?

    G'day Mark

Regarding climate zones: I don't think there is a universal system (say like, the Linnaeus system for classifying plants), which makes it a bit confusing when people post a zone number, and give no reference to the system which they are using.

The Australian government is now using a nation-wide mapping system with eight standardised zones. This system essentially breaks the continent down into LGAs (local government areas), on a state-by-state basis. Unfortunately the maps they provide do not give detailed information about each individual zone - other than for a name. For the detailed information you will have to open the second link I provided. However the information provided in this document is mainly concerned with the ecologically sustainable design of buildings - good in itself, but not much help for cross-referencing to planting schedules, etc.

    Climate zone maps: https://www.environment.gov.au/energyeff ... index.html
    Climate zone key: https://www.yourhome.gov.au/technical/pubs/fs42.pdf

I have no idea which climate zone system/s Eric and Michael are referring to (but I am sure they will tell us).

I hope the above helps in some way.

    Cheerio, Marko.

Purple Pear, I reckon when you get out into the mandala garden, you are always in the zone mate. Nothing like a hoe and row of spuds to get you in the zone!?

    Re: Zones ?

I was just mucking around with mine to get it set up...

I'd prefer to use ''Mild'', ''Cool'', ''Tropical'' etc. I'll update mine when i get a chance.

For some reason many people prefer not to include a country in their profile... maybe for priacy reasons, maybe for personal reasons... i thought having a ''Zone'' would enable users to better answer questions asked about what to grow where, etc.

Theres no right or wrong answer for the ''zone'' field... Just write something that will let others have a rough idea of what your climate is.

    Re: Zones ?

There are moves to make a Planet-wide zone system based on the USA system.
(Of which there are at least three. These in turn can be broken down into many sub-sections)
These just give you a shorthand or general idea of a climate type/area that you or others are in.
It can also save you time and money when buying plants. It can also give you clues as to what conditions aplant may like. If for example it is native to zone 8 that means it will prefer, best ,a Mediterranean climate but you may be able to coax it a little higher or lower with the right type of planting. So it goes very much to permaculture design issues.
It don't account for micro-climates and/or man made (hot house cool house) climates.
many seed catalogs are now using the shorthand ("hardy to Zone 8" for example)
If we used a zone system here would would just need to all agree on what the zones meant to us

    and
    https://www.backyardgardener.com/zone/index.html
    AHS Zones
    https://ahs.org/publications/heat_zone_map.htm

"Don't panic!",as the good book says, no changes are in the pipeline -it may not even be possible with this program.
If we start to use such a system we would all need to agree on using it and what it meant.

If you wanted to see how zones might be used on a forum look at
    https://myfolia.com/welcome
An itersting site that i am exploring at the moment.

This is a simple zone map.

For me, this is a bit gross. It ignores the Great Dividing Range entirely.

    This is a bit better

Using the same system you get:-

    Re: Zones ?

Now I'm just confused. By the Aussie govt map I'm in zone 3, but the USA hardiness system puts me in zone 5.

I think I'll just join Mark in THE zone with my iPod in my ears, my hat pulled on tight, and the fork in my hand as I dig over the compost.

    Re: Zones ?

we dont show up on the aussie map

    dicky beach

    sunshine coast

coastal subtropical - but we can grow apples, olives, grapes, granadilla, salak, bananas, coffee, cacao (for a while - dead now)

so pick a region - mediterranean - for the olives, apples, grapes, sub tropical for the nanas, sub tropical cool for the coffee, tropical for the salak and cacao

or maybe there should be a zone called lucky?

The simple zone map claims Darwin minimum temps at 10-15c ? i dont think so be lucky to get as low as 25c at best
