g'day squeak, probably too late now but did you have a rooster box to put them into each night? the idea of the design of the box is to block out all light, but be ventilated, this way the rooster doesn't know when morning is coming and crowing is somewhat diminished, i've been told the noise will stop. this information might help in getting a new home for them. is this at northey street? if so it's a wonder they can be heard over the din of 24 x7 traffic. did they get a decible check in their home? anyhow that's all old hat now. len

yeh up here in cab' shire we aren't alloe\wed to have chooks because we are on 750 sq/mtrs property and not the magic 800 sq/mtr. but you can have as many galahs and cuckatoos as you like. len

Richard. As per usual, doctoring your spin from afar and failing to realise that such actions are not only cowardly but, if discovered (not hard) harbour breach fines of up to $20,000. Apart from that, although I realise that this may well be your style, I'm not about to slink away like a beaten cur every time some desk chocko with a blue badge and a public service number decides to don his jackboots and throw his pen around. In addition, the roosters are purebred stock, one being a registered rare breed, the other a placegetter in recent national championships and a valuable stud animal. Apart from that, they're living creatures who have an integral role right where they are and are not there to be abused as you would suggest. Now, perhaps I am a coward. Or then again, maybe I know when to walk away and know when to run, or something like that... Seems to me like getting embroiled in a fight with the council over a couple of roosters is a waste of energy. (notice I say, seems to me - you are entitled to your opinion, as long as you express it in a civil manner) Especially when the rules made about keeping roosters in residential areas probably have a fairly reasonable basis. I mean, if you want to keep a rooster in a surburban context, I imagine that you could approach it in a number of ways. You could just do it, and let the rooster make a lot of noise and piss people off and cause a lot of angst, and then puff your chest out and fight for your supposed moral rights. Or you could do it quietly in the way that Len suggested, keep the poor bird in a dark box so he doesn't crow. In the latter case, when your neighbours get peace and quiet and you get your prize rooster, is the issue of cowardice really relevant at all? A third way might actually be to go through the proper process and make a submission to Council and try to get the local bylaws changed to accomodate your rooster. This would be the respectful, democratic way to go about it I would have thought. Of course, it may consume decades of time better spent, which is why I suggested that you quietly dispatch the offending roosters, and just as quietly reintroduce a new guy when the dust has settled, with the appropriate dark box in place.
Okay, so while on the one hand I was advocating you go through the proper channels to change the law that you don't like living under, on the hand, my main line of thought, which you interpreted as cowardly and shallow spin doctoring, was that you would do better to drop beneath the radar.
