    Hi,

I am looking to buy some Fresh Comfrey roots cuttings so I can grow some Comfrey for green Manure & fertiliser for our Organic Vegetable Garden.

I dont really want to buy seeds as we would like them to be harvested for fertiliser sooner rather than later.

    Thankyou for any help

Comfrey is pretty easy to come by down here - readily available from Ceres and some of the smaller independant nurseries and just last week I even saw it for cheap at the Slow Food Market at Abbotsford Convent.

It takes off like wildfire so if you can't get hold of seedlings the extra wait involved in growing from seed is quite minimal.

    Comfrey

    Hi Kyn
Choose the site you want to place your comfrey carefull, because if you decide to dig it up and move it somewhere else...you will enevitably leave a piece of root behind and never get rid of it.
Still it's a great compost activator.

I sent you a PM last night KYN, for some reason it's still in my 'outbox' and not in my 'sent' box...so I guess it's still on its way. :?

I wish I was in Melbourne then because I cant find it anywhere and the one nursery that had 1 plant here wanted $10 for it, which is ridulous I feel for a plant that can be reproduced quite easily once you have them started.

Anyway.. I will just keep Hoping and praying..

    Hi Kyn,

Have you tried the Sunday market at the PCYC on James St? Lots of plant sellers, including one dedicated herb stall. There is also a stallholder who has a variety of organic/sustainable things, from seeds, to the odd few interesting plants, watersaving devices, etc. There is also a Sunday market at the Wilsonton shopping centre, but I haven't been there in some time.

The Toowoomba Organic Gargens on Gogg St has comfrey growing. They are affiliated with the Darling Downs Natural Grower's Group. You'll have to Google them, as I have only recently returned to Toowoomba following a fairly long absence.

    Cheers,
    Polly

I am about to start thinning mine. If you want some, I'd be happy to share.

Earlier in the year Borage offered me some comfrey roots. I have tried three times to send him a PM, but they just stack up in my outbox and never get sent. Haven't had any reply on my query to the administrators about the problem.

Does anyone else have any bits of comfrey root? Spring is springing and the kikuyu is invading again. Can't seem to find anything locally except potted plants at prices that prohibit generous planting. Green Harvest says they send only in July and Aug. I am in Queensland.

    Cheers,
    Polly

I've had the same problems with PM's Polly, and Murray hasn't replied to my queries either...so don't take it personally.

Try Greenpatch - from memory they have it year round. I'd send you some, but we're on a new property since my post above and I've had to start from scratch.

I"ve just been sent some seeds by a forumite on BackyardPoultry - I've pmd him, so maybe he'll send you some, but if not I"ll send you some of these, otherwise, I'll send you some roots when they're going.

I also bought some a few years back from Green harvest: https://www.greenharvest.com.au They've got some here: https://www.greenharvest.com.au/Plants/r ... index.html

They also sell the best cockroach mats ever! - Dead End Cockroach mats.

Nah, I don't take it personally. It is just a bit frustrating since waiting for a response allowed the cut off date for Green Harvest to pass me by. I did write and ask if they could send out this late, but didn't hear back.

I looked on the GreenPatch site and found only plants, not roots, but it did trigger my memory that one vendor at the local Sunday Market deals with them. She too has only plants, but said she could ring them for me. Upshot is I will have a bag of 50 root bits waiting for me at the market on Sunday. That will take care of most of the edges. Goodbye Ky-killya!

    Thanks all for the suggestions!

    Cheers,
    Polly

Greenpatch send them as root pieces, not plants Polly.

They always used to at least.

Don't know what they used to do, but bare rooted was all I could find on their site. At $3.50 each, I hope it isn't for a bit of root only! https://www.greenpatchseeds.com.au/barerooted.html

Timing is working out anyway. Neighbour we share a fibro fence with is now interested in replacing it, so I will be able to do that fence line soon. Haven't wanted to plant anything where it was going to get trampled.

    Cheers,
    Polly

Well Polly, by way of example, the chinese artichoke at the top of their barerooted page also comes just as tubers.

Like most places I guess, some things are good value, others not so much.

Anyway, no harm in sending Neville an email to clarify whether it's a plant or a tuber these days.

IMO, with comfrey and most tubers, you're probably better off getting root pieces than a plant...that way you avoid any potential transplant shock.

Don't need to bother Neville, as Greenpatch is already sending up 50 root bits via a trader at the Sunday Market here. Works out much cheaper than the catalogue price, and gives a bit more business to a good stallholder.

As an aside, have you tried the Chinese Artichokes? I have heard very mixed opinions on their taste, but suspect they would grow well where I am.

    Cheers,
    Polly

    Hi,
I went to CERES yesterday but they haven't got any Comfrey in stock :(

I've got a huge garden (1 acre) that I'd like to populate with Comfrey to feed the fruit trees - and maybe even the animals!

Does anyone know where I can get some in SE Melbourne?

    Thanks all.

If you can't get any locally, try mail order. The root bits I got from Greenpatch are of a good size. I paid $80 for 50 pieces, posted. He could have some left? Also, I did get a reply from Green Harvest (after I had ordered mine via Greenpatch) and they do still have some in stock.
