Hi, I am busy digging up my front yard to plant. Yesterday I dug a 4m^2 area and it was hard going. I am defeated and want to switch to more of a no-dig method. E.g. Lay down some newspaper and then put organic materials on top of it. I am trying to source cheap materials, and I have been looking for spoilt lucerne. I found this person on Gumtree, and my husband is driving past that location this afternoon. Could someone advise if any of it would be suitable, and what questions I should ask? https://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/den...ales-for-sale-1000-available-cheap/1092963406 Thanks, Cassie
I'd want to find out what pesticides were used to grow it and how long ago. In some parts of the world, pesticides are now persisting in straw and then affecting the garden it is used in. I don't know if that's an issue in Oz. Other than that, you could ask them what kinds of weeds were in the pasture but it looks a good deal to me.
Usually not make pesticides are used on lucerne. If any are used it is usually early in the growing season. This of course does not mean that there will not be chemicals in the hay. Old lucerne hay usually makes really good soil but can take some time to break down.
