Hello everyone! What on earth is this spiky thing? It is a tree right outside our bedroom - we've just bought a new house and we haven't yet identified all the new things on the property. Can anyone name this mysterious nut/fruit? They are about as long as your pinky finger... bright green and spiky! LadyD
Re: What is this spiky thing? Hi, What do the branches of the tree look like and the trunk? Is it possible to take a photo of the tree?
Re: What is this spiky thing? g'day ladyd, can't realy judge the size but it looks like a durian fruit or jackfruit(Artocarpus heterophyllus), can't think of the other fruit that looks like that tastes great they say but smells up a storm. might be noni or something?? len
Re: What is this spiky thing? I will take a lottery ticket shot at this one too. It looks like a number of the immature tropical fruit. Also, it may be the horned cucumber/melon. Is it growing from a branch or a vine that is up the tree too. Last guess is that it is a mulberry on sterroids. Cheers
Re: What is this spiky thing? what's that michaelangelica? the spelling may be a little wrong tried a search and got nought. len
Re: What is this spiky thing? Sorry just being silly  Do you have a less fuzzy photo and a photo of the flower? m
Re: What is this spiky thing? yes a pic of the tree would help. I don't know if artocarpus grow in Sydney, if so it could be one of these https://www.toptropicals.com/html/toptro ... ssimus.htm if not it looks like something that might come off of an alder species. don't know australian trees though so just guessing
Re: What is this spiky thing? mmm could be jan, the thing here is none of us know the dimension of the thing hey? i am looking at what appears to be boards in the pattern behind the fruit whatever and if those boards are 4" or 6" wide then the thing is about 3"s, just how it might seem to me. now casuarina/she oak female cones from what i have seen are more round, and at that size would i imagine be brown in colour?? and the male she oak fruit is sort of long and thin. now ladyd is conspicuous by her absence in the thread, but there could be many reason why, so all we can do is wait and hope for some mre information as has been asked for in some of the posts. len
Re: What is this spiky thing? Sorry gang, I was rushing around after a 1 year old! Here are some pictures of the trunk, the leaves and more spiky things. For reference, they are as big as your pinky finger. Small, bigger than an almond though. https://www.greenbackyard.net/2009/01/17/more-on-the-mysterious-green-spiky-thing/
Re: What is this spiky thing? I think Len is right, looks like Artocarpus heterophyllus. Maybe the fruit is smaller because of your climate. Although the Jackfruit is a tropical plant mature trees have survived temperatures around freezing point. The Jackfruit Tree is handsome and stately and in right conditions grows to an enormous size. However, in temperate climates these trees will grow much smaller, about 10 metres. from https://www.gardenboutique.com/other%20Plants/index.html
Re: What is this spiky thing? mmm dunno now the fruit on the tree look walnuttish doesn't it?? does what we see go hard or is it actually fles 'ladyd'? could you cut one open lengthways? just it has the groove down the side and i can't think of a fruit outside the stone fruit family who has that shape. anyhow will do a look into walnuts just to see. but maybe the plot has thickened somewaht?? len
Re: What is this spiky thing? It looks as though the trunk is a sousop - or maybe a close relative?? the leaves are too shiney for the anona family methinks.....???? bingo - durian do a google for fruit and leaves and see what you reckon
Re: What is this spiky thing? You know - it could be a Durian... from my google search using images it certainly looks similar! I'm going to 'surgically' crack one open on my kitchen bench tomorrow and post the photo... let's look under the hood...
Re: What is this spiky thing? I'm with you Michaelangelica - that name you came up with looks remarkably like the Portuguese for 'green spiky thing'!
Re: What is this spiky thing? Durians smell divine , and no way in the world would there be a fruiting one in Sydney . It has to be some obscure nut or maybe it is not a fruit at all . The first pic did not show up for me the first few times I look at it . Could be Lychee , maybe a seedling one .
