    Hello!

I was wandering around the property the other day when I saw this big old half a castrol tin. I was just wondering what I could use it for? Do any of you have any suggestions? There is quite a bit of rust inside it... View attachment 1 rustycontainer.jpg[/attachment:23efbh62]

This is the bottom of it: bottom_of_container.jpg[/attachment:23efbh62]

Any suggestions gratefully received. Perhaps a no-dig potato bed?

    :?:

Fill it with sand and use it as root vegetable storage for after your bountiful potato crop?
Line it with plastic and turn it into a water garden?
Turn it over, paint it, put a cushion on it and call it outdoor seating?
Put holes in the bottom, almost completely bury it in the garden and then plant it with something a bit invasive that you want to keep in check? Like a bamboo.

    Kitty litter box.
Painted and with edge treated, cut a wooden circle to fit so that it sits on the top. Put it next to the BBQ. Storage for BBQ tools inside, cutting board on top.

This is fun! Do we get a prize for the best suggestion?

Why not?! A prize, great idea! Although, what is 'best' will end up being a highly subjective thing, because all the suggestions so far have been great. Ok, the prize will be a voucher at Bunnings. Bring it on.

I don't really know. It was hanging out in the shed. We've only recently bought the property. Perhaps water ... it looks very rusty. But before that? I'm not sure.

Fill it with sand and pour in old sump oil, and leave it in the shed. Then stand things like spades, shovels, garden forks etc in it. The sand and oil will keep them clean, dry and rust-free.

It originally contained lube oil for diesel engines; a pretty typical farm oil drum. https://www.castrol.com/castrol/generica ... Id=7010229

Ladyb, although your tin is most likely quite clean by now, it's always a good idea for anyone wanting to reuse old containers to check out the Material Safety Data Sheets on the former contents, just in case it has residues in it they need to know about: https://datasheets.bp.com/ussds/amersdsf ... %20NJ%20US).pdf

All manufacturers are required to make MSDS available, so a simple search of "(product name) MSDS" should do the trick.
