I think the pros and cons can often depend on what a person wants from their dam, and whether they have an open mind as to what a dam is.

So many people consider a dam should be a sparse vacant piece of water which you must keep all trees and plants away from..

Have a quick look at the following links about natural pools, as soon as I get enough space I am going to build one, and the water won't be kept clean if you don't have the plants in the system...

I guess it's a case of keeping all things in moderaation as a total covering of plant matter over the water surface can be troublesome, excluding sunlight and oxygen transfer at the water surface.. And beware of potential weed species...

This is something that we have been looking into too Lillypilly.

I found the following two web pages helpful:

    https://people.aapt.net.au/wildog/waterplant.html &
    https://homepage.powerup.com.au/~1earth/ ... html#water

We have three dams, one is hooked up to service the veggie garden (gravity fed), one is rather misplaced and dries out (we are going to plant this one out and return in to wildlife habitat) and the third one is more picturesque - near the house that we like to sit near to watch the birds and yabbies and look for possum and water rat foot prints. I’d like to plant edibles in this small dam and other plants in the large (garden) dam.
