If wood chip needs nitrogen to break down, then mixing grass clippings through it would help then. I'm sure that would be free too if you asked a random contractor if they'd like to dump their load at your place instead of the local tip.
I get the impression talking to other garden folk locally that dumping at the tip doesn't happen - they now charge a fee for dropping green waste off, so I suspect they have already found alternative markets. I'm also told that free mulch from tree loppers doesn't happen on the Coast. Best you can expect is to swap it for a slab of beer, or cash... I think gardeners are catching on that it has value. Which is a pity for those of us who want it free!
From reading on the other sites, it's hit and miss. Some people got mulch, some never got any so it depends on the contractor and their time amounts. Time is money, so to speak. I'd skip using a site for that purpose and contact all your local tree loppers in your immediate area and see what they are selling at, or offer your address for a quick drop. $10 a metre is a fair price, I'd keep that as a maximum if possible. A slab of beer, cold, will get you a load if you are lucky. That's well under $10 a metre. Keep an eye out for linetrimmers in your area, they output a heap and need places to dump. Have I said all this before?
Nope - or if you did I wasn't paying attention. What is the difference between a line trimmer and a tree lopper?
3 differences from what a layperson would call a truck and chipper. Line trimmers: contracted by energy company (like Energex) to prune trees encroaching on power lines and nothing else. Probably the best type of mulch to get. Treeloppers: cowboys that will lop anything and everything to make money. Usually don't perform their duties in the tree's best interests. Arborists: trained, caring tree surgeons.
Yep, a slab of beer mulches a lot of garden Still if you need a lot of stuff that service sounds worth exploring. There was also once an online service putting manufacturers with potentially useful waste (drums, pallets etc) with those that might be able to use them. Anyone know if this is still going? My council vacumes/cleans a local tourist beach of seaweed after storms; I would love a Truckload of that but I think they are reluctant to share in case seaweed is contaminated I did get a load of orange peel from a juice factory once; that was a disaster Soon people will realise how valuable this stuff is. It is already becoming harder to get PS In my area they are still vandals. The local council hates them as they massacre trees, make them dangerous and the council is up for the cost of removing/replacing them
Happened here recently, the worst it has ever been. Energex employed a new contractor, for significantly less, and got what they paid for. They even butchered a memorial avenue.
