It surprised me how nutritious Taro is.(A list of vitamins and minerals is given at the site)

Maybe a plant for Australia's wet North?

I have seen it at Woolies and at fruit markets; does anyone know how best to cook it?

Re: taro patch and rice pady

    foggy,

If you could get hold of any taro slips/pups I would have a go at growing it outside over melbourne's summer. Maybe in pots with poor drainage. I only say this because I have seen taro grown on mountainsides at elevation in Indonesia in the same area that apples grow.

Certainly I would put a pot into the hothouse too to keep slip production going over winter. They seem to be a lot like the plants known as 'elephant ears or goats ears' and I am certain I have seen those growing in Melbourne in frost-protected sites.

I do live tropical but dont grow taro because I dont know how to use it cook it. I have better mulch plants and I do eat and grow sweet potato.

Thanks to MA's research though I will revisit it as a plant but this time I will get smart. If I can produce any I will give it to either filipino or tongan friends. Most immigrants are extremely 'food friendly' and if you give them something they will invariably send you back some it cooked.

I have grown taro but only a few and they were plants that I stashed in the house garden and were attacked by cockchafers. The upside is that now I have a visiting flock of ibis whose favourite food is cockchafer grubs and they have quietened down enough for them to enter the house yard... :D

    Cheers,

I thought I had seen a segment on Taro on "Gardening Australia" I just had a look and there seems to be many mentions of the plant. Here are a few recent ones.

    Ornamental uses too!

It seems it will certainly grow in Melbourne.

Maybe the inspiration I need to get my frog pond going this coming year.

There are a few taro growers around here , as the high rainfall really helps . Amazing at how tall it can grow .

I have some of the Bunnlong , but cannot grow it as tall as them.
