I agree with everyone on a first flush system. My other theory (perhaps delusion) is, that even if a cat shat in my gutters a mouse died there and some nuclear fallout settled on the roof and it flushed into my tank the water in there would still be better than the local chlorinated, fluoridated, stuff pumped out of the polluted river. Of course I'm being dramatic, but you get my point. If you take some basic precautions the rain water in your tanks is going to be some of the best you can find on the entire continent.

    yes grahame,

the worst tank water better than the best chlorinated, fluoridated water one can get. this modern idea of concealing downpipes to the tanks also not for us, bound to be issues with water sitting in non food grade poly pipes getting heated by the sun, and dead thing could also enter this water and percolate in there, probably greater risk in drought time.

Have lived on tank water in two locations - 9 years and 17 years - both had(have) pipe going down - along ground and up into the tank. Have fished out a dead bird - a dead huntsman that had turned into a giant fur ball - currently have a green frog living in the pipework. Tank is concrete so plenty of lime and slightly alkaline - never have a problem with the water. Aerator heads on the taps probably help as it doen't take much oxygen to purify flowing water.

Been thinking on this - pathagenic bacteria ( ones that make you sick) only breed/survive at temperatures close to their host temperature - in the case of humans 39C . Water temperature would be lower than this and particularly in concrete tanks. Virus' need a living host to multiply and spread so little chance in a still water tank. Probably why people living on tank water don't general get sick from drinking the water.

    I know people that don't have a first-flush diverter.
They had their water tested ages ago and...holy collywobbles batman, that stuff was FULL of dodgy bacteria. And it still is. You're supposed to action that information folks!
They're guts are obviously used to it. I've got a pretty tough digestive system, but I get a 'funny tummy' when I stay. I imagine I'd become immune, but it seems a bit unnecessary to me.
