Anyone know how to affix hundreds of square kilometres of topsoil cloud back onto the ground? /Cough.
Re: Soil in the sky Where are you calling from eamonn? In the Hunter Valley NSW I woke to orange light and the air is full of dust blown from goodness knows where by a wind that has come up fiercely over night. I would like to know where the dust came from before I start harvesting it. But to pull in a couple of tonne of top siol would be useful. I wonder if there is a point in a dust storm when you reach for the mask? I will stay inside and bake till I get answers I need. intent-observation-intuition
Re: Soil in the sky I'm in Sydney. Its' from the western plains from what I've heard, around Dubbo/Broken Hill. Certainly brings the drought home. the masks help I think, the dusk particles are quite large comparatively. How were you planning to harvest it?
Re: Soil in the sky It may be tassie dirt we are getting here eric - is it any good for spuds? eamonn I have put all my vehicles out in to it and they seem to be collecting plenty and I guess the dam will be absorbing it too. My domes are pretty much smashed, so much so that when I started crying I got two buckets of mud.
Re: Soil in the sky Wow Down past Woologoong to. It has just cleared here now (4pm); still very windy. I, being a good permie, have been harvesting the dust with an illegal hose. ( I thought the dust might hurt/clog the plants too) Red I figgred must be Iron from pilbra I did notice, after I watered, a stange blue sheen on shinny leaves-copper? or just weird light? My post from another forum:-7AM
Re: Soil in the sky G'day It passed through south australia too - but of course that didn't make the national news. Hope all you eastern staters are ok, hope it doesn't hang around too long cheers
Re: Soil in the sky . Unprecedented !!? ...incorrect Michaelangelica. Sundry extracts from pg 86, Southern Lights and Shadows, Frank Fowler, Sydney, Australia, 1859... "...Generally, I did not admire the Australian climate - its sudden changes, occasionally of thirty or forty degrees (F) in two or three hours, its clouds of dust, its awful storms, and its hot winds..." "...The 'Southerly Buster', as this change is called, generally comes...early in the evening. A cloud of dust - they call it, in Sydney, a 'Brickfielder' - thicker than any London fog, heralds its approach, and it moves like a compact wall across the country..." (Also via, The Birth of Sydney, Tim Flannery)
Re: Soil in the sky . QLD is "ablaze" with bush fires most years - normally starts around ekka time in the south eastern corner. My experience is we've had less then normal number of fires the last few years so i expect we'll get some doozys soon - let the fuel load build up and it goes big time.
Re: Soil in the sky According to our local rag, Tassie potatoes are extremely lacking... i don't eat many myself but try to get organic ones when we do and they taste MUCH better than available fom shops... i only grow them to build soil up. Its a weird dust we got here... Its clinging to the rain water like a syrup. Most dust settles in water after 24 hours or so.

Re: Soil in the sky that's one belief forest dweller, but 1 news report was closer to the truth up here ours generated from what they call the western downs that belt of brigalow country (the buffer between us and the desert beyond)that they have been decimating in their quest to grow food for export mainly, with lots and lots of irrigation. creating at least dust bowls at worst deserts and destroying the natural ecology and habitat. how many towns west of the range between you and SA got badly affected or worse actually? len
Re: Soil in the sky thanks Len I was wondering if anyone would ask the question-Is this man made, or are they going to pass it off as a natural phenomena. If it is money blowing away it gets thousands of hours of media attention. :ANAL:
Re: Soil in the sky [quoteAlmost unprecedented Look at this ][/quote] Michaelangelica, re the Broken Hill video, have a Google Earth look-see of the area South through West of Broken Hill - its all open cut mines and tailing dumps. Methinks it explains the localised intensity of the dust volume... :|
Re: Soil in the sky We got it yesterday arvo here in Ayr too, although not so thick as you lot. It`s just very hazy here and going up to the lookout you can`t see too far out. It`s not bothering me at all though.
Re: Soil in the sky for me permasculptor, all the bad that comes our way we created as humans, for the most we individuals had no say and still have no say in it, and we won't have any say in the repair and objecting at the ballot box doesn't work as they are all as bad as each other, though it would be interesting to see the independents in power for a stint not the affiliated independents the true independents. we don't vote 'em out often enough. len
