Ianto retired several years ago. The book is nine years old now. Much has happened since the book. Ernie and Erica are now the leading innovators for rocket mass heater stuff. The first DVD is "Fire Science". This is where Ernie and Erica set stuff on fire in all sorts of wacky ways. This is the foundation for understanding how rocket stoves and rocket mass heaters work the way they do. fire burning sideways and upside down bare hands bonfire tricks rumford effect fireplace designs flammable chimney demonstrations stump stove diagrams and physics and math, oh my! fire, flames, heat and overall rockety-ness The second DVD is called "Sneaky Heat". The wood burning stove built in this DVD is the result of a collection of experiments that led to a rocket mass heater an order of magnitude better than any previous rocket mass heater. For the first time ever we have a shippable core. Somebody else could build this and ship it to somebody that is looking for something easier. Plus, this particular core makes for a fire that is about a thousand degrees hotter than any previous rocket mass heater. This makes for a stronger draw - which leads to more push later in the system. For this project we use the core in a portable design. Something that can be taken apart in under an hour, loaded onto a truck, moved and rebuilt in under an hour. The third DVD is called "Boom Squish" - named after a series of podcasts where we discuss the dangers and strategies of alternative hot water. Caleb Larson and Ernie work together to talk about how to do this right. Caleb is a professional alternative hot water installer and is very familiar with the explosive properties of steam, flash point and vapor lock. The final DVD is called "Hot Rocket". We set out to prove that a few twigs can outperform a huge propane turkey cooker. Mission accomplished. This is with a J-tube style rocket stoves. Other rocket stoves feature an L-tube style the requires constant manual feeding. The J-tube style is self feeding. This DVD will also have information on some tiny home made cookstoves, and several different pocket rocket designs.
There is about to be a new edition of Ianto and Leslie's book out. This is going to be a really good update. Lots of new stuff going on in it. I contributed to the Kickstart campaign and so I got a copy of the DVD set that Paul's flogging. It's pretty good on the info. It's neat (for me) to see Ernie and Ericha's teaching style.
Thanks for the kind words Donkey. I've been hearing about the new edition for five years. Do you know how close it is? If nothing else, here are two things I would like to see in the new edition: mention of the pebble style (aka "portable rmh" or "wheaton rmh"); mention of the DVDs. I know I have moved over 800 copies of the book from my stuff directly. Probably more indirectly. It would be nice to get a little mention somewhere. I think the pebble style needs more testing - but so far the results are looking good. And I currently have heaps of shippable core info all over my screen - I think that will also be a cool thing to mention even if it is "in R&D now".
Leslie is getting the layout all together now.. I expect it'll be good to publish in a couple months. If I know anything about what's up with Leslie, she's up to her eyebrows in work. No lack of material to deal with. Her problem is sifting through the piles and deciding what to toss out. From what little I've read of the new edition, I didn't see your stuff in there. Did Ernie and Ericha get with Leslie (this time around) for more "case study" stuff? Or yourself?

I can only go with the first DVD(the only one I've had a chance to watch so far...volunteer and work life has been busy during the summer), fire science, but it does have good information, especially for a novice such as myself. I understand the basics of rocket stove technology, but not the inner workings. I have no idea how it would stack up on the basic --> novice ---> intermediate ---> expert spectrum. I can't say much for that camera dude's skills (*cough* Paul Wheaton *cough*), but he acknowledges this and also makes it entertaining("talking chimney"). What it lacks in cinematography, it does compensate with information and charm. I'm a permaculturalist, looks and fancy special effects aren't my thing. I don't regret crowdfunding the project.
I am glad you feel that way and there is a lot of information. I was merely pointing out that 4 dvd's can hold a lot of data & I doubt it contains a proper compressions worth in my own snarky way. It's a shame IMO to see peak moment resources going to poorly done compression. I think in order to save the mods trouble, I will set off my own perma-blitz...muah hahaha. 8)
Donkey and Leslie, I have about eight podcasts with ernie and erica going into a lot of detail of a lot of the innovation stuff. At least three are about rocket hot water. I think the final analysis is that unpressurized hot water is safe and pressurized hot water with rocket stoves is too risky for beginners. The pebble style is, I think, going to end up being the most popular form of rocket mass heater. Ernie, Erica and I have been working with a couple of others to flesh out an improved core. Lots of exciting stuff there. But still in R&D. But this will be a big part of the workshops that will be going on this october. Leslie, I sent you an email to ask about the affiliate program.
