Resident Permaculturalist required for developmentally oriented tourism project in Southern Ethiopia

    BACKGROUND
The Strawberry Fields Eco-Lodge is due to commence operation in Karat Konso, in Ethiopia’s Southern Region, before 2008. The site for the lodge has been acquired and the construction is currently under-way.

The aim of this project is to establish an eco-lodge set within a model permaculture farm, which will demonstrate permaculture techniques to the local community and to guests of the lodge. It is aimed to develop an effective permaculture system on the site using the (already renowned) local agricultural system as a starting point, and working with both local farmers and foreign workers and volunteers to improve upon that system. Once a permaculture system suitable to the area has been developed, the lodge owners intend to establish a permaculture school and an NGO, which will work directly with local communities in the area, investing revenue from the lodge’s earnings in developing infrastructure and skills to aid the local community in achieving permanent food security.

The lodge is currently at the establishment phase and is looking to fill the position of Resident Permaculturalist. The successful applicant to this position shall fulfill the following criteria and shall undertake the following responsibilities:

    • Have a willingness (and ability) to learn foreign languages (Amharic and Konsinya).

    PREFERRED

    • Degree level education in agriculture, science, engineering or a related subject
    • An ability to translate scientific concepts into simplified information which is comprehensible to uneducated individuals.
    • Experience of working in the tropics and in third world countries

    RESPONSIBILITIES

The successful applicant for this post shall undertake the following responsibilities upon assumption of the position:

    • To guide the permaculture design process on the farm and share the task of managing the farm, including workers and volunteers.
    • To help to develop a permaculture system suitable to the local situation, taking the local agricultural system as a starting point.
    • To learn about the local agricultural system and contribute to improving its robustness to environmental uncertainties, especially drought, by working on water management practices, as well as on energy saving practices such as biogas production.
