    Do you want this?
Many forums have such a system -see "other permaculture forums" thread.
If you like the idea can come up with some appropriate & creative names
Seedling Choko, Vine Choko, Cooked Choko ? ? ? :)

I doubt they are helpful and could lead to insincere posts just to get a better ranking unless we start people off as grand master permies and then you work your way towards being an ignorant fool who knows nothing as you realise in time that the stuff you know is a spit in the ocean compared to the stuff you don't.

Re: Ranking PDF members? What do you think?

LOL, good one Mark. I agree, lets start everyone as permie masters.

Seriously though, I always find those ranking systems on other forums a bit non-egalitarian. I don't want some people to be special other than how they are naturally.

If people want to see how much someone posts or how long they've been here etc, there are already ways of doing that.

Michael, I'm worried now I'm going to be naysaying all your ideas about the forum ;-) I imagine it's interesting finding out all the functions we could have here the the php forum format. Maybe we could have a thread that outlines what the options are, and people can say what they think would be useful?

Personally I think the forum is working well at the moment - if it ain't broke don't fix it. Too much change puts people off, especially change that is dribbled out over time. We might have had enough change this year already.

I thought I'd better post something here, because I don't want Purplepear to get too far ahead of me...

Could help encourage participation... I was at 597 posts recently - I went looking for something to reply to. I couldn't leave it hanging until i logged in again :--)

I know if i need specific support at other forums i always look for member ranks, moderators or high post counts before sending a message. These peole usually give quick responses.

Re: Ranking PDF members? What do you think?

    G'day Michael, All

Ranking? No, please no. Seriously, I believe that ranking would be the epitome of vulgarity (no offence meant to anyone). Not to mention that it would encourage competition of the worst kind (see: https://www.netaddiction.com/articles/symptoms.pdf). Surely we do not wish to encourage a proliferation of 'one liners'? A bit of fun is OK, and a little light banter to and fro (from time-to-time) never hurts, but please, do not institute a system of ranking. Currently the PRI Forum provides for a huge depository of knowledge and wisdom. It is an egalitarian and non-hierarchical entry point for many who may be just dipping their toes into the 'permaculture waters' for the first time. I am very strongly opposed to any form of 'cheapening' our forum. If practices such ranking, or indeed advertising were to be implemented here, I would be very reluctant to continue and recommend our pages to the numerous people - from very diverse backgrounds - that I have the privilege to meet.

    Cheerio, Mark.

Re: Ranking PDF members? What do you think?

    G'day
I really object to the ranking system, even with 'funny' designations; I hate the heirarchical structure of ranking, and think it is unnecessary and demeaning.
Reminds me of the English class system which permeates every facet of life.
I feel that it is a contradiction of permaculture values, and that participants shouldn't be judged on the number of posts they contribute, quality is of value too, and the ranking system is basically an 'award' for numerous posts.

And I doubt whether it would do anything to encourage more participation - more numerous and sincere welcomes when people introduce themselves would go some way toward that end.

As you can see I feel quite strongly about this, and unless it is a feature that has been specifically requested by numerous participants then I say no way!
    cheers

Re: Ranking PDF members? What do you think?

Everything in life has a rank of some kind...

Anyone with a job would have to answer to someone...

The pecking order of chooks always ranks toughest to weakest...

Bigger trees will always grow and outrank the smaller ones underneath trying to get some sunshine...

Whatever horse won the melbourne cup caused a lot of loosers to be outranked by a handful of winners...

A ranking system on forums is not really a ranking system, more an achievement system. Like spending 4 years studying and finally getting your Diploma. Its good to have goals...

I have no problems with a ranking for posts.
It is on many forums i am on and i do not even notice half the time. :)

I like the 'going backwards' idea.
Starting with Manuel "Que?" and ending with Sgt. Schults "I know nutting" :)
The more you know, the more you realise how much you don't know.

    G'day
Indeed that is sadly the case in the hiearchical, male, dominant paradigm, but just because it is, doesn't mean it should be ....

No please, in some other forums I've been on it has made people post just for the sake of posting rather than useful info.

It just sounds rank, have you run out of other useful tasks to attend to?Naturally if ranking were to come into play,a character of such astounding insight and value such as myself, would require a big cheese ranking, because I have an inflated sence of self importance.
    Best Wishes B.S

Re: Ranking PDF members? What do you think?

Naturally Bernado. Your self importance and ego could both use some further inflating!
I would say "over my dead body" but that may happen too - in an issue as big as this. And you may think that Malcom T has issues.
    regards

Re: Ranking PDF members? What do you think?

So if rankings are based on how many posts one does, will I be more esteemed than Geoff Lawton who has posted 115 times compared to my 589? Pretty ridiculous, no?

I think ranking makes even less sense than on this forum than elsewhere, because the really experienced permies are out in the garden instead of here on the internet ;-)

I think there is a ranking add on that allows users to rank each other. If you like a post or comment you just click the ''Like'' button...

Unless they are smart enough to have chooks weeding and controlling pests and cultivating for them and worms aerating the soil and so on :p
