Pinerivers Permaculture Group has one member, need at least 4 to make it an official organization. Geoff Lawnton dictated the legal requirments at the Melbourne PDC. I mentioned this idea months back but I have been very slack in following up. I am ready now to remove finger. Anyone interested please let me know.

    Hi John

I would be pretty interested, what type of group were you thinking of?

Are you in town or based on acreage?

Thanks for the replys, Hello Baz I live just around corner from you on scouts rd. The type of group I had in mind is A local non-profit group incorporated, once registered with the department of fair trading, we will recieve a booklet titled 'Model Rules'. To form a group like this we need:
    -President
    -Vice Presidnt
    -Secritary
    -Treasurer
    We will also need members.
We will need a mission statement, and public liability insurance.
If we join the "Australian Gardening Association" we can get cheaper insurance, aparantly they like permies.
We will need to have mothly meetings, eg: second monday of each month 5-8PM thats only 12 evenings a year.
Also an anual membership fee, to cover costs of insurance, projects, newsletter. The Model Rules booklet will show us how to keep everything legit. We would want to keep fees as low as possible as the idea is to make a difference not a profit.
The reason for naming the group after the shire it is in, is because that shire then ows us favors as we have affiliated ourselves with them by name, eg if the council has mulch to dump they have to ask us if we want it before they can throw it away.
Once the group is big enough we will find local members of council sniffing around, this is because any community group represents a population of voters and their families, if any group large enough decides to take an interest in local council elections, they then have potentially the power to vote for members who support their interests: socially environmentaly etc, and vota against those that don't. I am a member of the local pottery group and David Dwyer is a familiar face around there.
Geoff Lawnton spoke about starting the noosa group, Bill said he was able to generate enough support in Adelaide for a local group that the city council gave them 3 sites to choose from for a city farm.
If the communty does not get interested in council they are quite happy to run them selves as they please and forget that they are actualysupposed to work for the community.
We can also affiliate with other local groups for example- recyling groups tree planters etc.
All this is straight out of my course notes, I have no experience forming or organizing a group like this, I need help. This is not a top down organization, there is no room for gurus.
Useful people would be, accountants, Lawers ,Regulation specialists, creative writers, anyone interested in learning and sharing knowledge and experience. I hope this isnt too much too soon, keep those replys coming in any interest, suggestions, help etc most welcome.

    John.

Was it something I said?
If this is too much the other option is a non formal group who organise to meet and discus ideas and topics that affect our local area. Any ideas? advice? Anything? :?:

Wow John.........yep maybe a bit toom much too soon but know how the enthusiam for a new project gets the juices flowing.
How about just to start we get together and have a chat before we bog down with the committee stuff....know we'll have to do it eventually and there is strength in a formal group.
I'm happy to host the first meeting in about a fortnight....how about we invite all interested parties on Brisbane Northside.

I am also in Pine Rivers - over in Bunya. Will keep an eye out for where you are going with this group. Am interested to see what type of projects you are planning. I tink education of the wider community is a priority. I think a lot of people in Pine Rivers would be receptive to permaculture concepts. It has always amazed me just how may people living in a fairly close radius of each other (in Pine Rivers) are members of this forum - shows that the type of living oferred in Pine Rivers is supportive of permie types. If the group ever got any lobbying power, I reckon 1 valuable thing to lobby for would be more favourable water tank subsidies. I think the subsidies offerred by Pine Rivers are a disgrace, particulalry compared with Brisbane City.

Everybody should be strongly encouraged to get water tanks. I know a lot of you guys may not have town water, but there is a lot of pine rivers that does, including acreage.

Just a bump to remind people of our meeting. Hope anyone on Brisbane northside or in fact anyone from this board will consider coming. Consider it a meet and greet for the forum....the Pine Rivers people can get together to start their group and others can get to put faces to names on the board.
    Cheers
    Cathy
