Anyone have any thoughts or experiences on permaculture happenings in New York City? I have never been there, but plan on making a trip soon. I will probably be walking around with this face:
Permajake, There used to be many city gardens in NY, wonderful community managed gardens in neghborhoods, and the most famous and beautiful of them all was Adam Purples Garden of Eden. I knew Adam over a long period of time, and some of my memories of being 6 were in 1972, seeing him on his bicycle in Central Park, in his purple clothes and white beard, collecting horse manure to carry down town to his garden. When I was abour 14, I met him in Central Park, and, sharing a love of backgammon and books, we became friends, until I left the city at age 17. Adam was a very smart guy, with lots of information and wonderful quotes, which he used all the time. This is too short a space to do justice to his wit, his humour, and his far reachin and agile mind. I always enjoyed his talent with turning phrases, and his garden was lovely. I visited him at his building, heated with firewood, and hung out in his garden, a gorgeous mandala of flowers and veggies. I visited with him at his garden many times, and it was a wonderfully creative place in the middle of heroin shooting galleries, later crack houses, and his garden was a wonderful and beautiful spot in the middle of one of the worst neighborhoods in Manhattan. His garden was the nicest place in NYC. Sadly, I haven't seen him in over 12 years or so, and I have no idea what happened to him, but his garden was destroyed in 1986, and that was a criminal act. It was ostensibly destroyed to make "low income" housing, but the subsequent apartments are yuppified gentrification, and there were thousands of other locations to build housing. His garden should have ben landmarked. https://shadow.mediafilter.org/shadow/S4 ... mpurp.html and, I think this is Adams own page, with great photos: https://www.eclectart.com/gardenofeden.html A list of city gardens I found is here. There may be more information, but if you have friends in the city, they can get you to any of these gardens. Some of them are sculpture "gardens", others ornamentals, and a few veggie gardens. https://www.earthcelebrations.com/gardens/eden.html I have to run. More later. C
Christopher, thank you so much for sharing the info and links. I look forward to the "more later" you mentioned , and I will be sure to post back with anything interesting that I gather on my trip.
