    Hi All

I have been wanting to hold and organize my own permablitz doing over someones garden for some time, after talks with good friends who wanted to know where to start with a garden, we started on a plan to permablitz their old gardens from lawn and other rubbish into a productive organic food system.

Kathie and Teilo who live in Toowong Brisbane have a 600m2 block with a med size highset house, the longest side of the property faces nth, with a slight slope from sth to nth.

This is the front yard which is open to a quite street.

The back yard to over looked by all neighbors and has western afternoon shade.

News paper mulching the backyard which was covered with 10m3 of new top soil. 50mm under the grass was a base of small stone.

Mounded top soil around an organic shaped keyhole path. Path was mulch with from chipped garden waste.

A floppy fence to help keep out possums and bush turkeys, a round bale of lucerne hay was used for the front and back gardens.

Baz working hard dividing clumping citronella grass.

I used a laser level to add a mini contour swale to the front yard, below the swale we planted 5 citrus trees.

The finished front yard with 11 fruit trees, citronella grass was planted outside the fence line as a source of mulch.

Finally to finish off the garden I added a bath tub worm farm.

I would have liked to have planted out the garden with new seedlings but as the new 10k water tank was a week off I decided to hold off until the first rains, The whole project was completed over two days with help from Kath and Teilos friends. I intend to go back and add some finishing touches.

Follows is an email I got from Kath with some of these photos.
I don't know how often I intend to do permablitz's as they take lots of time and effort to setup, but I do see some more on the way. :D:D

I hope you enjoyed a peak at my first permablitz.

    Baz

Love the bathtub worm farm. Can you tell me, step by step, how this was made? Cheers, Trish

    Hi Trish

I get old bath tubs cheap from out local tip shop ($10 each). In the bottom of the tub goes about 20-30lt of gravel, this is to stop worms from passing out the plug hole. I fill the worm farm full of OLD wormer free horse manure, Use old manure so you don't heat up and start to compost and kill worms, In the end without the plug I add an 8 inch pot which I cut out the bottom of then use a pot tray as a lid, I add food in this end then it filters down to the plug hole in time, I wet the whole thing with water and add the worms then cover with a few layers of Hessian bags, design the farm in a shaded spot too, no summer sun. I use these farms for liquid mainly not so much for castings. If you want castings, feed the farm from one side to the other side harvesting out the casting then refill with horse manure. Make sure you leave space for you bucket under the farm too.

Baz - great work. It will be great to see pics in 12 months time.

I have a question. What is the machine in the seventh picture on the first post. Looks like a big chipper mulcher???

That would come in handy right now  - but I expect they will be fully booked for weeks.

Out of interest - how much do they cost to hire?

I think it was about $150 for the day (24hrs)

If I had more time I would be out collecting as much of it as I could, free mulch and edging logs everywhere
