I'm sure it depends on the size and type of pump but can someone give me a general idea how much noise one makes? For instance, can they be heard from more than 5 or 10 meters away?

    Hi Rusty,

Although I have never used a ram pump, and so don't have any real-life information for you, I thought your post needed some kind of response! I did find a couple of sites that talk about the noise of a pump.

https://www.atlaspub.20m.com/rampg.htm This one speaks of the Atlas pump sounding somewhat like a "heartbeat"

https://www.eng.warwick.ac.uk/dtu/pubs/tr/lift/rptr13/rptr13.html This one speaks to placing the pump underwater to reduce noise

https://www.engr.uga.edu/service/extension/publications/rampump3.pdf And this one talks about increasing the length of the drive pipe to slow the beat frequency which will reduce wear and noise.

How are you planning to use your ram pump?

    Hey 9anda1f,

Thanks for the reply and links.:)

In planning for my future place, I'm thinking of using a ram pump to get water from my creek up to a cistern some 75' up the hill. I'd use this water for supplemental irrigation and, if need be, some fire protection for my house. But, I wasn't sure what to expect in terms of pumping noise. I'd hate to add a noisy artificial distraction along the same area I'd normally find peace in hearing nothing but a running stream. :?
