Observation is the Key

Permaculture changes film festival?

Ex-'Gnome Swings East

Former Metrognome Collective director James Watkins is a few days into his gig as the new director of the Dallas Video Festival. He comes on just as the festival is about to hold its annual 24-Hour Video Race. "We're just getting the goodie bags together," he said.

It hasn't been uneventful for Watkins since Metrognome lost its space last summer. His work with homeless veterans at Metrognome and his increasing interest in sustainability led him to a sojourn to Oregon, where he completed some coursework at Lost Valley Educational Center. The school specializes in training people in permaculture, a method of designing human settlements and self-sustaining agriculture systems that imitates nature's ecological systems.

He hopes to use that training to make the Dallas Video Festival a greener event, but that's not all he's hoping to accomplish. After his return to Fort Worth, he found the job opening on Craigslist. "The Video Association has been around for 20 years," he noted. "It was a chance for me to function within a long-lasting nonprofit organization."

KIDS and garden worms are the focus of Veggie Village workshops at Peregian Beach Community Gardens on Sunday, May 24.
The Permakids gardening workshop for children aged 5-12 years will be held from 9-11.30am. Cost $5. Bookings essential with Leonie on 5474 5892.

Some communities, like Hummingbird Ranch in Cleveland, New Mexico are a lot like you might expect: spirituality and wellness focused, with the sustainable aspects being solar power, low impact yurts, permaculture gardening and the like. It’s run as a retreat center. Lovely as it is, it’s remote,

Green investors can be taken advantage of like any other - perhaps more easily, if they have an idealistic rather than financial bent.

On 93 hectares of land bought for $227,000 in 2000 at Mill Creek near Stroud, in the Hunter region, EcoForest planted a mixture of tree species native to the region (originally logged by Australian Agriculture Company in the early 19th century), to be used as structural timber. The operation was small-scale and based on permaculture principles. There was no pesticide use.

Ultimately, it got too hard for EcoForest. Voluntary administrators Hall Chadwick were appointed in 2005 and about 120 investors (including August) lost almost two-thirds of the $1 million-odd they had put in.

Not a great story.

If you can't beat them, join them. In its listed portfolio August held a small number of Great Southern shares as at June 30, and had about $50,000 worth of forestry MIS - managed by Great Southern Plantations, Macquarie Forestry and Timbercorp Eucalyptus.

Mr Rine is a horticulturist with the Taranaki Regional Council, but any "ornamental" garden he puts in will have to be edible. The couple's view is to only grow things that have a purpose.

In practising permaculture, they have to try to meet any need they have in several different ways - "so try to have three different uses for every plant".

Even the five donkeys - Biscuit, Boy, Prickles, Otis and Zebulin - have a job to do. They were hired to eat thistles.

The farm has sheep and cattle - and a policy not to eat anything with a name - and pigs will arrive when the pigpens are finished. But there is no cow to hand milk.

As a teenager in the early 1960's, I felt deeply about the wanton destruction of so much of our natural and built environment and of the imposition of an ideology that saw progress as purely linear and mechanistic and which, in the process, discarded so much accumulated wisdom and knowledge. I felt desperately the loss of balance that this entailed, and all I have been trying to do for these past decades is to right the balance. Hence I believe it is essential that from now on we rediscover how to work in harmony with Nature, rather than against her. There needs to be a balanced and integrated approach to how we live on this planet, so that we are a part of, and not apart from, Nature and her underlying patterns of which we are a microcosm.

Whether I am vindicated or not isn’t really the point. There is no pleasure in being proved right
