Green Harvest A History of Organic Farming and Gardening in Australia Rebecca Jones

    Green Harvest
explores the ideas and practices that have shaped organic farming and gardening in Australia from the interwar years to the present day. It reveals that Australian organic farming and gardening societies were amongst the first in the world, being active as early as the 1940s.
Personalities in Australian organic gardening, such as Jackie French and Peter Bennett, talk about organic growing. The book also features extracts from early organic magazines and interviews with current organic growers, including banana and macadamia farmers, managers of outback sheep stations, dairy farmers and self-sufficiency gardeners. All of these tell the story of Australian organic farming and gardening: past, present and future.

I wish I had the funds to get a great library with some of these books.
We have an old 30's house with small windows (4' of window space compared to the 5-6' per small room)and it has concrete block walls= cold.
Insulwool is in the ceilings and we started putting the thick plastic down under the house.
    Its still cold.
We could put carpet back in the house with the underlay which would make it feel warmer but I'm not really a carpet person.
    Problems,problems
Wish our library had more on these sort of books.

I have an idea that one day i might moot to my local permaculture group, (that overlaps two council areas).
The group raises a lot of money. They don't do lot with it. I thought of trying to get them to start a group library but that is cumbersome and difficult i have found from experience with previous OG groups.
I wondered if i approached the local head librarian and asked him if we(the local PC Group) bought permaculture related books for the library (say one a month)- would he look after them? but would he also give access to the books we bought to members of our group but not in his Council area, (and thus usually not allowed to borrow)?

I try not to buy books anymore as I have no where for them to live and am no longer on a Capitalist Pig income. But i am often seen coming out of op. shops with a pile of "presents for others"
    Last month I complained/winged at my local (excellent/cheap) St.VDP.
    "I have a complaint!"
"O dear, O my, what is it!"
    "Your books are too cheap!"
    "What!?"
"Your books are too cheap! $2 for a huge hardback (or virtually any book) is too little!
If they were dearer, then, I wouldn't have to buy them!"
The volunteer laughed because she thought I was joking.

    Urban Consumption
    Edited by:
Peter Newton Swinburne University of Technology
    Illustrations
    304 pages, 270 x 210 mm
    Publisher: CSIRO PUBLISHING
Growth in human consumption is the transcending problem of our times. In the short span of 50 years, high income societies have shifted from an era when a ‘simple life’ was the norm to one where material consumption is pervasive. Consumption has become the engine for post-industrial societies. The liveability of cities in these societies is directly attributable to the consumption of resources – indirectly via their built environments and directly by their residents. This pattern of development is not sustainable. Nor is it equitable.

Designing and Building for Health, Well-being, and Sustainability
    Andrew L Dannenberg
    Howard Frumkin
    Richard J Jackson
    456 pages
    Publisher: Island Press, USA
The environment that we construct affects both humans and our natural world in myriad ways. There is a pressing need to create healthy places and to reduce the health threats inherent in places already built. However, there has been little awareness of the adverse effects of what we have constructed -- or the positive benefits of well designed built environments.

Defending the Social Licence of Farming
Issues, Challenges and New Directions for Agriculture
    Edited by:
    Jacqueline Williams
Issues including climate variability, water scarcity, animal welfare and declining biodiversity have led to increasing demands on farmers to conduct and communicate their farming practices so as to protect their ‘social licence to farm’. Farmers are increasingly expected to demonstrate their social and environmental responsibility as a pre-condition to being allowed to carry out their preferred farming and commercial practices. Current examples include the live animal export trade, battles over protection of aquifers from mining, and contests over rural carbon emissions.
In Defending the Social Licence of Farming, authors from Australia, the USA, Europe and Iceland document the diverse issues associated with the ‘social licence to farm’. They provide examples of different sectors’ strategies and experiences, and give specific indications of what is involved in coping successfully with this political and legal dimension of farming.

In the US, states and localities are stepping forward to address critical problems like climate change, urban sprawl and polluted water and air. Making a city fundamentally sustainable is a daunting task, but fortunately, there are dynamic, innovative models outside US borders. Green Cities of Europe draws on the world's best examples of sustainability to show how other cities can become greener and more liveable.
Timothy Beatley has brought together leading experts from Paris, Freiburg, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Heidelberg, Venice, Vitoria-Gasteiz and London to illustrate groundbreaking practices in sustainable urban planning and design. These cities are developing strong urban cores, building pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure and improving public transport. They are incorporating ecological design and planning concepts, from solar energy to natural drainage and community gardens. And they are changing the way government works, instituting municipal 'green audits' and reforming economic incentives to encourage sustainability.

Whatever their specific tactics, these communities prove that a holistic approach is needed to solve environmental problems and make cities sustainable. Beatley and these esteemed contributors offer vital lessons to the domestic planning community about not only what European cities are doing to achieve that vision, but precisely how they are doing it. The result is an indispensible guide to greening cities.

We all want to minimise our environmental impact, but we don’t always know how. In this new edition of the bestselling Warm House Cool House, respected Australian architect Nick Hollo provides valuable advice, illustrated by more than 100 inspiring contemporary examples of low-energy housing design, to help keep our homes cool in summer and warm in winter with little or no cooling and heating by appliances.
The book shows how we can live comfortably without airconditioning in Far North Queensland, be cosy and bushfire-proof in the Australian Alps, and cope with temperature fluctuations in cities like Melbourne and Adelaide. From project and kit homes to new architect-designed houses, renovations and extensions, these low-energy principles can easily be incorporated into every home.

tone House Construction is a comprehensive study of Australian stone building techniques in a residential context, for people with an interest in building or renovating, including property owners, architects and builders. It has a strong theme of historic stone buildings, as traditional forms of building respond to the need for structural integrity and stability over time against weathering.
The book covers aspects of building in locally sourced stone, from quarrying on-site to building arches over openings for upper storey walls, and is a source book of examples and methods to help the reader to carry on a tradition of building in local stone.

Stone buildings inspire people because they transfer a natural beauty to a human achievement. The book shows many examples of Australian stonework that have not been given exposure in previous architectural references. It promotes Ecologically Sustainable Development
