On the front page we have this listed down the bottom.

Registered users: Ask Jeeves [Bot], ho-hum, MSN [Bot], Yahoo [Bot]

In about 1997, I set up a bot. It was new and novel and I cant remember anything past that.

    My questions:

    How do bots 'register' themselves?
    What do they collect?
Are their good and bad bots?
What exactly is a bot and how does it assist or detract from a forum?

    Hope someone can assist.

    cheers, ho-hum

They spider webites to collect data for search engines. More content = More visitors, is the theory. Each Engine uses different algorythms in determining how they work.

Theres a section in the admin area of modern forums that lets you turn on which bots you do or don't want to spider the forum.

Admin, is for site administrators. Those that set the site up and manage how it works. Murray & Bill, for example.

    The front page is https://forums.permaculture.org.au

When you scroll to the bottom of that page and see "Who's online", sometimes the "Bots" are listed with registered users. If you don't see any listed, its probably because theres none crawling at that time.
