Where did you get this info from, Jim Bob? What is a "river" by your definition?

Lets see your numbers to support this.

Absolutely correct. Scientists make lousy politicians, they tend to call a spade a spade. That's why politics doesn't interest me PERSONALLY - I'm realistic enough (and seasoned enough now, career-wise) to see that I can't make a significant difference DIRECTLY in the political field. I'd probably be assassinated lol. However, I CAN make a significant difference by giving politicians choices by presenting them with facts. Saying that I should be concerned about politics I find quite patronising, Jim Bob;- I've worked on both sides of the fence, at local, State and Federal level (twice at CSIRO), and also in private industry, for coal companies. I now work on the opposing bench. You'd think by now I'd have mixed a bit with pollies. Well I have. And some very peculiar creatures have crawled out from stones beneath my Bludstone boots.

    .

Amen to that! We all like to share knowledge and thoughts, that's why we are on this and other forums. But one of the really frustrating things about the internet is that we don't really know who we are talking to. We could all be experts or all be idiots in real life. So instead I prefer to share (technical) knowledge, ask for help and advice, and experience "the vibe". Talking about politics over and over doesn't really garner greater knowledge in me personally, although for others its extremely important, integral part of Life.

One thing I've learned is that you can talk until you are blue in the face about any subject, but you will never change another individuals point of view unless they have, in their own minds, done their own research, considered their own perspective, and weighed their own potential outcomes in their own time. For example, I had a very disappointing experience with a sibling, a fellow scientist (biologist) a few weeks ago who has gone into denial about (human induced) climate change. There is no point in arguing with her, she has to make up her own mind on this issue, she has plenty of info, but trying to force the issue will only get her back up. Everyone's journey (political, or otherwise) is different.

That's all I wish to say about politics.

    Thanks for reading :)

    Great post Sprite. :)

You must have too many pairs of undies and socks now Len...you're in a comfort zone where Murphy's Law no longer bothers with you.

Now, if you wait until you're wearing your last pair of each before washing the others...Murphy's Law and the rains will come back mate.

At least, that's my scientific opinion.

I dont think little johnny will turn of the tap. You only need to turn off a tap if somethings coming out of it.
Last winter,2006, I watched the mighty Murray run bankers past my door (Albury) all winter. they never turned it off at the weir.
Every other Autumn, when irrigation was done, they shut off the flow considerably.
Last Winter it just kept flowing high, and kept flowing and flowing right up to this Summer. And then it just kept on flowing high! (downstream of Hume wier)
I was at Tintaldra on the Murray, Australia Day 07. Not much water going down the Murray river, which made sense I thought as we didn't have much water in the system.
I was at Tintaldra again at the end of April 07 and was amazed to see the Murray running quite high, the result of power generation.
I understand the need for electricity generation, but can we afford to use the last puddles in the Snowy system for this?

Top stuff heuristics...please clear out your sheds more often!

We get so complasent about rain here, that when the forcast says it's gunna rain we all think 'Oh yeah?' then we're all afraid to get too enthusiastic and clean out drain pipes and gutters cause then if it doesn't rain we'll think it was all our fault...we jinxed it! When I hear rain on the roof while lying in bed at night, instead of enjoying the pleasant sound I lay there thinking 'oh please keep raining, please please pleeeeeeease.' Someone up there must've listened to me for a change last week cause we had a nice 3 days of rain.

I've always considered where we live a desert. Just average 300mm a year of rain.......last year 160mm.
Without water the land here is worthless. With such a low rainfall irrigation is needed to grow almost anything. Even to start off natives.

We are River Murray irrigators, so to hear Howard actually say allocations would be zero was quite frightening. However any farmer with their finger on the pulse would have seen this comming for months, perhaps years.(we did) Yet on a property just down the road from me there is a massive new vineyard being put in, on...hmm... a couple of 100 acres or more. (um what about the so called wine glutt?) All the trellising, manpwer ect doesn't come cheap so I'm thinking either they know something we don't or they are incredibly stupid... oh then there's all those new massive almond plantations, almonds use same amount of water as cotton.
I could go on and on....
    But I wont :)
