when you chop off a birds heads aim as close as possible to the skull. if you cut into the 1 2 or 3 number vertebrae the bird remains still. cut into number 4 onwards and the bird will struggle. regards leo mahon permaculture design institute.

I heard a good idea the other day, that is to use a "killing cone". For a chicken it can be a large plastic bottle that you would get 3-5 litres of water. You cut off the bottom of the bottle, and make three holes around the edge so that the cone can hang up. You gently slide the chicken in head first so the head and neck hang out of the top of the bottle. If the opening is too small, just cut to widen. The chicken is relaxed and cant flap and make a mess cause it is snug in the cone. Do a web search and you'll find some commercial ones too.

    hello newwavehealth,

cut and kill as desribed above and the bird will not struggle. it is lifeless. the cone of death does appear however to be a good back up device just in case.

try to get it in the right spot, but seriously, you could always just hang onto the bird!

Yes the "slaughter cone" or "killing cone" is the best way to kill your chickens.

You are hand-free and can do the job more comfortably.

Furthermore, I've read somewhere that headless chickens produce tougher meat.

    Cheers,

I just tuck the bird under my arm and break the neck. It stops moving pretty quick! :axe:

    Phil,

Can you describe how do you break the neck ? Do you twist or pull ? Do you need much strength ?

Would you apply the same technique to quails ?

    Cheers,

    Parata

    Parata,
You pull the neck away from the body (holding the head), and twist about 180 degrees untill you hear it crack and it sort of becomes loose. You know when its enough. No you don't need much strength but you should do it in one fast motion so you don't stress the bird.
