Just gorgeous everything ... man, philosophy, scenery, house, life, art ... everything :)

And he got the furniture into the underground rooms via the light thingy in the roof yes?

Good question. You could be right. I don't know, maybe even before putting the whole roof on it? Maybe it was brought in in pieces?

i've always loved the idea from the first reading of _The Hobbit_ many years ago. we have some earth bermed houses around, but not many which have earth roofs and grass on top. i don't mind small places with a low roof, but i'd still want at least 7ft ceilings (bookshelves and storage space :) ). if it were well insulated you'd be able to keep it a little warmer, but i would certainly need air exchange, you don't want a place so tight that you end up dying of carbon monoxide/carbon dioxide poisoning. in this part of the country, any earth built homes also need a radon check. if you are doing anything with rechargeable batteries you also want to make sure they vent to the outside.

i don't see any pictures of furniture, but i loved the front door all by itself. :) i would imagine that most of the items he has have been either hand built or brought in chunks at a time and put together inside...

Did you watch the video? He has filing cabinets & desks & bookshelves & a photocopier in there! I'm pretty certain he didn't hand build the copier :)

no, my connection is too slow for most bigger stuff unless i set it up to run or download while i'm sleeping... didn't see that stuff, but yep, probably brought that in through some gap or a hidden door. if he's doing art, then he's gotta have a way for it to come in and out. or you'd think... :)

I wish I would win the lotto ... if I did I'd shout you a high speed internet connection, because it's just wrong not to have it :) The internet is my favourite addiction & I get the feeling you'd really be into it too :)

Having my internet throttled for a week sucks. Videos are painful at times but oh well!

well as we are deliberately low tech here all options for higher speed would mean having to get rid of the land line and Ma refuses to do that. but the sentiment is appreciated. : ) they did put a tower in for faster connection, but they sited it just beyond range from us. that would have been a very good option as the price is reasonable.

the last two wires we hang on by go for many miles to get to the nearest substation. DSL won't work that far. the other phone company has lines which may go the the house about a half mile away, and they'd have to get under the road and traipse into competition territory. i don't think they'd do it for less than a few thousand. cable tv. only by satellite. still costs too much. i don't watch much tv. i only want a faster connection so i can download more techie puzzles. i.e. nothing critical. the earth will not end if i don't have a faster connection. but it was one reason i do miss from living in town. DSL connection and phone for a reasonable price.

to me, internet is about talking to people, not sitting back and watching more piped in stuff, even if it is high quality stuff, it is too passive for me, i like talking back. : ) for entertainment, books, they let the imagination go farther. tv gives a specific vision, and yes, it may inspire, but i find it less so than a good read. still, thanks again for the good thoughts, i have similar thoughts about what i would do if i won the lotto, but i don't play it...

    lol : ) good point ... I don't buy lotto tickets either : ) Can't win it if you're not in it : )
I guess you've got all you need then with your internet : ) I'm a bit different - I'm very visual & love to be able to see photos ... not just of the people & systems here, but also photos of textiles & art stuff. I don't use the internet for anything other than this ... just my couple of pet forums, cruising textile stuff, facebook, & googling everything : ) Oh - & banking : ) I hate going to town, so it's awesome to be able to pay bills & buy stuff online : )

The internet provides my only company & it's very important to me. It's my connection to the rest of the world & I value it dearly. On the other hand I sometimes wonder if I didn't have it if it would force me to seek contact with real life humans, which would probably be far better for my long term well being.

this goes far afield, but hits on three of my recent thoughts, one that it is much easier to be alone and use technology to filter people and contacts and two the birth rate is likely to continue to decline as long as pornography and people stay at home and three that people use dogs/cats as companions because they too are easier than other people. who can resist a friend who is always happy to see you and relentlessly loyal?

i don't know the end of humanity, if we disperse or change forms or what to go beyond this place and situation we seem to be in. it is interesting to ponder. out here on the end of the line. along this road. in this state, country, continent, planet, solar system, spiral arm of the galaxy, in the local galactic cluster, etc.

the book _the hobbit_ gives us a glimpse of an ideal society, geared towards two things, eating and gossip with all the support underneath of gardening and a respect for nature. in some ways _the hobbit_ and _the lord of the rings_ were some of the earliest anti-technology environmentally aware books (who can resist the ents and the story of how they lost the entwives?)...

I read The Hobbit when I was a small child & I can't remember much of it. I don't think I've ever read The Lord of the Rings. If I did, I've forgotten. (I know some people are gunna have a heart attack at that statement ... but chill out, I was like 7 when I read it/them.) : )

Yes to the filtering out people. But I think I'm nearly done with that. I think I've now grown enough of an exoskeleton to be game to have a go at joining the rest of the world.

Yes about pornography being isolating & easier than reality. I think I've gained a much deeper understanding of intimacy & sexuality issues the past few years.
Who cares about declining birth rates??? We needed to stop breeding last decade!

Yes about the pets. Guilty. Guilty. Guilty. And lovin' it : ) Mind you I'm totally qualified for a reprieve on this one as I have had 2 teenagers who were just "normally" hard & unrewarding to love, & 1 who is Olympic standard hard & unrewarding to love, & I never have nor ever will stop loving them for a second : ) I'm not a coward when it comes to love, I just like to have the back up wet noses & unconditional cuddles as well : )

As far as I can tell we're not changing forms or going anywhere. We're dying. Here. On earth. And taking most other species with us.

And yeah ... it's awesome to watch it from afar ... at the end of the line as you put it ... out here in the silence of the day & the blackness of the night & the stunning beauty of everything. Online, tuned-in, connected & watching life from one's own little planet far, far away ... it's like being god : ) Except here is better because I can have coffee & chocolate & vodka & roast pork & cheese & yoghurt & cherry plums & figs : )

However ... I think I've watched myself watching life for long enough. I'm bored. Bored enough to jump back into the blood bath I think : ) Or to at least stick my toes in again : )

Thanks for posting that Rick : )

I take it you're on facebook? "Overgrow the System" looks like a great page & I needed it this morning after joining a dozen CSG protest sites yesterday & depressing the hell out of myself - so again, thanks : )

    And I found this:

    Everything in moderation.

    Except Awesome.
You can never have too much Awesome.

Now that had to be written for me ... lol ... I think *awesome* is my favourite word : )

I love tiny houses & the whole tiny house movement, & I was just recently looking at container houses, so this was a nice site to have a look at.
My question about container houses is what is the cost of the resources to convert them to the very slick homes you see on sites like that? And what skill level & tools do you need to do it?

Yep, I'm on Facebook, but most of my page is just shares of somneone else's posts.

I would think the glaring beneficial aspect of a container house is you don't need to think about the floor & roof and load bearing walls and such.
