G'?Day all, We have two Highland Heifers that we must get rid of - we were going to milk them but that is not really feasible. We can't really afford to give them away but if someone has some cash and good intentions then give us a call - we are at Pinkett near Glen Innes in the Northern Highlands of NSW, Cheers, Sololeum
Yoo Hoo found someone near Glen Innes.....we wont be there till about Nov. but planned on a couple Dexter's but highlanders would be an option. If you still have them them. Cheers Cathy
CATTLE G'DAY BARLEY RUN, I've not been on line much - hassle of starting the genie etc. We wanted to exit the Highlands and buy a dexter or two - for milking - What is your aim with the cattle!! If it is milking then not so much of a good idea... Rosie (red Highland cow) has had her first calf now - a couple of weeks ago - a Hereford X (unnamed) heifer!!!! She got over the fence and we thought she matched up with an angus, but no - she was lucky!! The Highlands are a beefy breed and do very well on the rough "super free" pasture that we have - Lucy (black Highland heifer ready for mating) is really fat. Where are you setting up? Cheers,
Bit slow myself in replying at present... Yes was thinking milk and meat so Dexter were my first thought. Have a 2ac paddock with shelter. We are planning (Gone to contract) on buying the Blue Saphire caravan park. Has great potential to run as a business and self sufficent lifestyle. Plan on moving in Sept/Oct. Cheers Cathy
re purchase Congrats Cathy on your proposed purchase. You might be able to beat me to a 'permaculture caravan park'. I found this if you havent seen it. https://www.traveldownunder.com.au/New_South_Wales/New_England/Blue_Sapphire_Caravan__Park.asp mike
Hi Sololeum, Do you still have the highlanders for sale? I know someone in Dorrigo who runs a bd/permaculture/agni hotra farm (so needs lots of good quality cow pats) who may be interested... Cheers, Sonya
HIGHLANDS G'Day Cathy and Sonya, Yes we still have them, Cathy I take it the Blue Saphire is in Inverell, if so about half way between Inverell and Glen Innes are people who have a Dexter Stud. With the Highlands you would have to wait a generation and then put a dexter bull over them, unless you only want a litre or two! Our girls, although tame for beef cattle are not able to be lead easily, and so are not really pets. We probably will have to send them to Armidale - one of the agents does small lot sales that suit us small holders - be bought some sheep and sold some goats last month - and came out in front!!! Sonya if you could pass this link on to your friends I would appreciate it. Cheers, John
Hi Floot......never thought to do a google on the park Yep it looks as if all our plans may come to fruition.....even Chris was looking at the lawn areas as sheep feed......couple mobile fences...less mowing. Has a lot of mature pine trees which will need culling soon. Be looking out for a local timber yard or similar. Will be replacing with nut trees (for the cold)...chooks, already an old chook house and herbs and some vegies. Still trying for my aquaponics setup....would suit trout but chris isn't convinced (Yet)...We plan on permanent sites all as sustainable as we can get...tanks, grey water etc. Hi Sololeum....check out Floot's link....it is on the edge of Glen Innes on the road toward Brisbane. Liked the look of the highland cattle but from what you've said will go back to my first choice of Dexter's
Cathy, Way to go... whilst I 'own' the permaculture park thingie... hehehe.. You can use it. Actually, I think you should, just for we permies who wanna go on holiday. Sometimes holidays arent all about sitting on a deckchair get our arse sunburned. Most folks like a holiday that incorporates something and this is why I aksed the forum about a 'permie park'. You can stay and maybe turn a bit of compost, prune a tree, plant a border. This sort of thing. Economically, it is a great opportunity as it is something, like minded folk to us would want and support. There are lots of 'farm stays' and suchlike but there is nowhere that I can find in Australia where I could visit such a venture for ''$14 a night plus power'' and believe my holiday may just be sustainable. You see that even when 'peak oil' visits us there will still be holiday destinations and those destinations must meet the requirements of there customers. Congrats again floot
Floot you will be very welcome to come stay and go fossicking for saphires in between a bit of planting etc. Will have to incorporate a Permie Member "special rate" Cathy
