we have just bought various trees and are wondering how to give them the best start. should we mulch the bottom of the hole before we put the trees in? Should we use compost to fill the hole? Any hints and tips would be greatly appreciated. keep up the good work everyone.
Re: giving our trees the best start An animal carcase or something along those lines, I often throw 20 or so dead cane toads in the hole, the other thing is biochar, lots of info around here on it and how it's made. What is your soil like? where are you based? Rain fall?

We´re in portugal in the mountains, soil is slight acid, we've not been there long enough to reliably know the rainfall in this area but as we are high up the rain seems to be regular especially at this time of year, it gets dry for about three months of summer but generally it seems there's a lot of water in the soil as we have a created lake at the top of the land, three pools at points down the land and spring water in various places. thanks for information
Re: giving our trees the best start ah yes also... trees we are planting include.. pomegranete, avocado, plum, orange, walnut, chestnut, diasporum, apple, honey locust, carob to name a few, it's rather varied but are there any general ideas for types of trees, ie stone fruit, citrus, nuts etc... ta
Re: giving our trees the best start your deciduous trees need to be moved in winter when they are dormant all of the evergreens - probably spring would be the best to give them a chance of surviving the trauma a good start is a hole about two or three times the size of the rootball, a bit of compost in the bottom and fed and watered. my philosophy is - stick them in and if they want to grow they will.... the otehr post i mentioned was viewtopic.php?f=1&t=8559
