I would like to design rooftop gardens in Tokyo without bringing in large quantities of soil, using only small amounts of compost and plenty of mulch. I would appreciate any advice from people with experience in the area of starting gardens on concrete about what plants I could grow and the problems to be thinking about.
    Big thanks,
    from Hayama.

    Hey Philbo !

I haven't tried it "yet"... but, have heard stories of putting down about a meter of straw... then wetting it all... then putting little lenses of compost on top of the straw in which you plant your seeds. This way the seed can germinate in the soil, and it's mature roots can cruise down the straw and pick up moisture and nutrient throughflow.

This would obviously be heavy on the mulch, but very light on the compost.

After some years, I'm assuming it would basically turn into a thick soil base... which I'm assuming is what you'd want ;)
