Australia Felix Permaculture - Earthworks Practicum

People have been asking us for years if they could work with us on one of our projects to gain the practical experience of putting a design into practice. We finally have found some time to do some work on our 9ha (23 acre) patch 20km outside of Bendigo (8km from Strathfieldsaye) where we are starting the process of developing this site. This phase of the process involves us working with one of our favourite contractors in Jennings Earthmoving Services (Castlemaine VIC) whom we have worked with since we started our business over 17 years ago.

Over the week of the 14-18 June 2010 we are building a 1ML Ridge Dam, Access Roads (that also collect water), Installing Concrete Pipes, Entrances, House & Cabin sites, Tank sites, Lockpipe Installation & Diversion Drains, plus a couple of Small Wetlands, Leaky Weir/Induced Stream Meandering systems, & Gully Restoration.

So it will be a busy week and we would love to have a few folks join us. We have kept the price down real low and have made it extra cheap for couples to attend. It is winter so it will be cool-cold so camping is optional and we have accommodation available in shared housing both in town in Bendigo and 5 minutes away at one of our friend’s farmhouse. We will feed you really well from our gardens and from our various local suppliers of meat and dairy. Vego’s are catered for too, if you have really specific needs then you’ll have to let us know well beforehand. We’ll be filming the whole process, so be prepared to be on camera.

    Details are below:

    Date: 14-18 June 2010

Where: Corner Shanahans Rd & Mills Rd, Eppalock, Victoria, Australia

What to Bring: Warm Work Clothes and Boots, Camping Gear (if camping), Notebook, Camera, Great Positive Attitude

Accommodation: On site Camping or at 45 Casey St, Bendigo East, Victoria, Australia

Public Transport: Flights into Melbourne (MEL) & almost hourly trains from Melbourne to Bendigo. We can pick you up and drop you off at the Bendigo Station.

Price: $150/day all inclusive for couples, $120/day all inclusive for singles

    Bookings: [email protected] or phone +61 3 5443 9410

Payments: Full payment on morning of Day 1 (14th June 2010) or Pre-Pay via PayPal or Direct Deposit

Numbers are strictly limited to 14 people.

A handbook will be supplied to each participant as part of the practicum. As always our typical open access to all kinds of electronic materials applies so please bring a portable hard-drive or larger memory stick.

    Program:

    · AM (Bendigo) Overview of Design including catchment analysis, site walk/landscape reading, geotechnical reports, Digital Design: cross sections/plan view/volumes, budgeting, contractor relations and scheduling + sequence of works

G'day, Thanks for the notes....short notice will probably reduce numbers: just thought we'd fly it and see how things go...that said we have a few bookings already....

On the video front we'll be doing short segments a la the Taranaki Farm series....not much point making a huge production from our perspective: I prefer creative commons and ultimate ease of dissemination....All the best, Darren

    All the best,

    Darren
