where the hell north west South Africa Namibia Angola there is a tribe called the Damara and they live in the Damaraland and they kept the breed the Europeans adopted the breed for their hadiness drought resistance and their reistance to internal parasites and their unusual herding should be called flocking instinct they certainly stick together when spooked which has to be witnessed to to believed and good for the farmer they pass on these traits to their crossbred off spring I have yet yo lose a healthy live born lamb to a fox and I certainly have foxes.
Lez, Written text often cant do justice to what would have been recognised in speech. What I was doing was politely hinting along the lines of: Pssst where are you located [roughly]?... You could well be in Damara which would make the purchase pretty expensive. cheers floot
can ou expand a little more Lex...are they the sheep that dont need shearing.....do they tolerate cold/heat cheers cathy
expand a little i`m in central victoria murchison near shepparton below 600ml and under well really Damara are from a hot climate as you probably know desert temperature can drop to 0 and below at night. aparently they can survive or do well almost any where New Guinea, Canada, you name it they adapt. the one and only problem i have encounted is the pasture quality being to good this causes problems with their feet its called delamination outer foot shell separates causing a pocket or narrow cavity to form its not foot rot in muddy conditons it fills with crap etc and if not monitored could be a problem i have learned to watch out for it and maybe twice year after it has rained i pen them and trim the feet of any that need it its always a good policy any way i like my sheep to have neat feet. a NZ farmer runs his sheep on gravel or hard surface to knock the crap from his sheeps feet seem to think thats all it needs.the sheep are in our care we should care. i could ramble on regards Lex
Lex, can you tell me what they are like with fences? Do they need particularly secure fencing? I am researching this breed for a possible family meat flock. Was thinking a ram and 4 ewes. I am in Vic so could be interested in some of yours if the rest of the family are up for it, but I need to get all the figures to present to them first. What age is best for eating?
more damara they are generally good with fences I only have two out of eighty that are in my case break in artist and two don't really do much damage (we are primarily certified organic vegetable growers). And then one day I left the gate open we were gone over night and did not arrive until late afternoon still not a lot of damage because they are browsers. just bits of stuff missing here and there. What age is best for eating. six months to eighteen months.
Re: Damara sheep for sale Hi Lex I'm wondering if you have any Damaras for sale . I'm looking at stocking my property with around 10 in the spring
Re: Damara sheep for sale Anyone know of other people in Nth Queensland with damara sheep? I lost 3 ewes and I am looking at replacing them.
Re: Damara sheep for sale I have decided to sell the remainder of my damara sheep. Yes they are easy to care for and yes they do shed their hair (it is not wool). Where we are we had 93 inches of rain in the first 6 weeks of this year. I have a concrete floor shed that my sheep can get up out of the weather in and that saved them from the rain. Where Victoria it can be bitterly cold, Qld can be extremely hot and the sheep do not seem to be bothered by the temp in fact in the heat of the day they will sit in the middle of the paddock without going for the shade.
