I wonder always about the parks in Brisbane, lots of lawn and a pannel saying ...catchment area please don't dump. Is this an area for catching drinking water of the rainfall? It seems to me a bit small - or is the catchment area bigger and includes houses and streets or is the sense completely different? And nearly never I can see any creek - was the creek filled bevore?

If you can get hold of a topographic map (not sure of the spelling or correct term) it'll show you all the contours. From this, you can work out the catcment area, as water doesn't flow down hill. You don't need creeks, just a slope.

Most of our catchment areas here in the Yarra Valley (we've got a few significant reserviours including Upper Yarra Dam and Maroondah Dam) are fenced. The lawn areas you see are basically the picnic areas in the immediate vacinity of the reservior to cater for public recreation. The areas are quite vast and usually include a lot of natural bush.

so it haas nothing to do with the catchement itself and it is only a cover for the reservoir?

Well, I'm an old Brisbane boy, and I assumed that it is an effort to make people conscious that the land drains into the creeks and rivers and then out into the bay... and that it is all a part of one pretty small planet!
I think the drinking water resovoirs for Brizzie are all "upcountry" as they say here in Hawaiin islands, you know, Hinze dam, and whatever the other ones are called. Their catchments are probably a lot cleaner than the Breakfast creek one for example.
I trust I will be corrected if I am missing the point here.

Did I write 'down hill'. You all know I obviously meant 'up hill'!

You're right Richard. Both the picnic/recreation areas at both Upper Yarra and Maroondah dams are both down hill of the spillway. I'd reckon your assumption re educating the public is spot on. The fenced areas run for miles, but few people are aware of them.

    Funny, Tam!

I'm north of the Equator, so our water runs DOWNHILL. I wondered if because you are below the Equator, the water runs UPHILL!
