Hi Brian... thanks for all the info, and I am a committed reader on the Milkwood website ;).
Sadly I am not excessively tall, just right at 5.3', but wear size 4 shoes (lady size 7.5) :D. Stubby is the name of my first horse and somehow I ended up with it as a nickname. Maybe because we both have short legs and a big barrel?
I am sold on the bathtub worm farm :) I have all the ingredients, other then the worms, so expect an order from me tomorrow, and I was thinking too that 1/2kg of worms is nowhere near enough to deal with all that poo around my place. Oh... and I have to pinch some bricks from the neighbour... they are just lying around there doing nothing, might as well put them to good use ;).
I reckon I start looking for another bathtub or two now... don't really have the space for windrows but a spot for a bathtub I can find :).

They'll breed up so if you are short on cash start with a bucket and work your way up to bathtub...

Thanks eco... Luck would have it that I picked up a bathtub today from one of my clients who is doing a bathroom reno. The plan was to use it as a water trough for the horses, but making it into a worm farm is a much better idea :)

Thanks Brian that will be awesome. How long will it take to get the wrigglers to the Lockyer Valley? I am working 7 days straight after tomorrow, and might just order the worms to time the delivery with when I am home so they don't sit in the letter box all day and cook. So hold off with the packing for now ;). Was thinking of ordering 1kg of worms to get me started... hope that's enough to get things hoofing.

LOL... nope they have an auto water trough which is gravity fed from one of our water tanks :). I was going to use the tub for the visiting horses, but yes... they will have to drink out of the old black water tubs I have... don't like them much as the water gets hot in them in summer. Ooooh... I can use them as worm farm as well... they are 100L tubs :). I was wondering what good use I could put them to.

I can post via normal post and I would say 2days. Let me know what day you want them sent. I can check Aust Post for more accurate times tonight. You may have to do 2 orders as the PayPal is set up in lots of 2,000. I use 60lt ,160lt and cement mixing trays. The trays I use for breeding and the others for hatching and growing. On my phone at the moment.

Awesome... I am off work every Thurs and Friday after this run of 7, so if you send them on Tues or Wed next week that will be perfect :). I put in for 2 lots and PayPal is happy with that, just had to edit quantity once I am on the PayPal screen. No... you haven't received the order yet, but will hit the okay button now. Just wanted to wait for your answer. :)

Well, those 100L troughs will be turned into wormfarms and maybe a little pond for some water plants. I've got 3 of them, troughs, not water plants :).

Your on the phone and I am just back from work ... on my day off. Lucky they pay me well ;).

    Hi Brian,
will that work for the wrigglers? Do I need to fill it up with the poo before they arrive?
[IMG] Old oven shelves and birdmesh to make space for the worm wee.
[IMG] Shade cloth over it and rocks to make sure the bird mesh learns to stay flat.

    Hello Stubby,

That looks great but ditch the rocks. If you have time put in some poo and wet it really well and cover with the hessian. You can layer newspapers under the hessian too if you wish. Looks like horse poo in those garden beds too. Give them a good soaking and cover with mulch to keep the manure damp. Give the worms a month in the tub then take some manure out and put it in the gardens. What that will do is transfer worm eggs to the garden and a few worms. The eggs will hatch and grow quite happily if you keep the manure up to it and damp.

The worm eggs look like small grape seeds ranging from light green to dark brown. They get darker as they get older and ready to hatch. They will mostly be up near the top of the tub just under the hessian.

Did you get my email today?

    Hi Brian,
cool.. the rocks will definitley come out, just in there to train the bird mesh until I fill up the tub with poo. Yes, that's 8 barrows worth of horse poo, and that wasn't even all of what was on the paddocks. I've scored oodles of shredded paper as well from work, 9 garbage bags full. I suppose I can use that instead of the newspaper? I was hoping I could transfer worms into the garden beds once I have them growing well :).

I raked up a heap of poo again today so will put some into the tub tomorrow after work and give it a good soak :).

Got your email too... looking forward to next Thursday. :) :)

Shredded paper and cardboard can be used in the bedding but I am not a fan of it. I used to use the whole newspaper under the carpet on my bathtub. The worms really seem to like newspaper for some reason. Crikey look at the time, this old fella should be in bed

Stubby I just remembered you have horses lol. I feed my worms chick starter pellets, coprha, full fat soy, mollasses, dolomite and coffee grounds. You would have some of this already. Cornmeal or cracked corn is good too.

LOL... nope haven't got anything like that... though I can do coffee grounds... oodles of them as well. Hubby is a coffee geek... we roast our own. Plan is to plant a few coffee trees as well when everthing is up and running... just not 'robusta'.

Just thought... what about coarse layer mash? They could share that with the chooks.

I love good coffee. My daughter gets heaps of coffee grounds from her work at the coffee shop. The worms like them but they are acidic so sweeten up with some dolomite. I thought you would know about the food I use. It is mostly horse food. My daughters horse is too good to eat grass if you ask her. It would be just eating grass if it was mine.

Yes the layers mash is good, just soak it in water till soggy. I got the chick crumble as it had a higher protien level as with the full fat soy it is full of protien which the worms need to get fat.. When you get too many worms feed them to the chooks as well.

Grass, or grass hay is the staple food for my equines, can't afford the other stuff. Lucerne chaff is treat. My old boy though gets some rice bran to his diet to keep the weight on him, the girls ... they need to loose weight... a bit like me ... hehehe.

I will give hubby a 10L bucket to put the grounds in when he empties his bangbang.

It's amazing how much crap coffee is about when you got used to your really good coffee.

I think my worms will be very happy worms once they are in the tub :D

Feed some rice bran to the worms too.
I bought the box today to post them off on Wednesday. I think a few extras will find their way into the shipping bags. They will be in two bags inside the box.
