If you think you – and your chook shed - have these qualities, consider entering the CONTENTED CHOOK AWARDS!

These are the inaugural CONTENTED CHOOKS, sponsored and run by the ATA. The Alternative Technology Association is Australia's leading organisation promoting sustainable building and representing consumer issues.

With branches and members around Australia and New Zealand, ATA provides practical information and expertise, based on our members’ hands-on experience. We also offer advice on conserving energy, building with natural materials, reusing, reducing the use of and recycling natural resources.
The Contented Chook awards open August 1 and close December 31 2005

Applicants must complete a simple, two-page application form, including non-returnable plans or photographs. Available from our website ata.org.au – alternatively, contact us on the below address for a mailed version.
There are three categories:

• THE CONTENTED CHOOK, URBAN CATEGORY – this structure must be within an area with designated street lighting.
• THE CONTENTED CHOOK, RURAL/REGIONAL CATEGORY
• THE CONTENTED CHOOK DESIGN CATEGORY. Don’t despair if the chook house of your dreams has not yet eventuated – if your design wins, we’ll give you the opportunity to build it! Students of art, design and engineering are particularly encouraged to enter this category.

It goes without saying that chickens require housing that will protect them from the elements.
ReNew would also expect each structure to comply with local government regulations on poultry housing.

All winners will feature in upcoming ReNew magazines and will receive a year’s subscription, in addition to other prizes that will be selected by the applicants.

Our celebrity panel will judge the Great Australian Chook House on:
• Climatic suitability
• Solar orientation
• Innovation
• Water usage
• Material choice
• And artistic merit
