Re: chickens wanted We have a free frange farm here that has 15mth old Isa Browns for $6 each... Point of Lay are $20 each might be easier to come this way than go to Brisbane......also check the Stanthorpe markets. Cathy
Re: chickens wanted quite a few of the stock and station agents have chooks in brisbane - - I got mine from a strathpine place - yellow pages should find more if barely runs isn't close enough ...
Re: chickens wanted I always get mine from 'Capalaba Produce'. They also sell organic, vegetarian laying mash.
Re: chickens wanted My neighbour is getting me a couple from someone at Fernvale markets (west of Ipswich I think) They will cost me only $5 each. I'll get contact details when i see her next.
Re: chickens wanted Have a look at this local chook site https://www.backyardpoultry.com.au/ There is a list of breeders with every type of chook. Stay away from the isa browns and get some rare or unusual breeds, its a real buzz being able to show visitors your naked necks or aracaunas Cheers Kurt
Re: chickens wanted I have 1 wyandotte columbian, 1 light sussex, and 1 isa brown. The isa brown has laid an egg EVERY day since it started (around 2 weeks after we bought it) The wyandotte and light sussex started laying about 4 months after we got them, then laid around 2 days in every three for a couple of months and have now not been laying for two months (they have both gone clucky). That said we get a great deal of pleasure from the different personality and appearance of the other "breeds" If I was you, I would get one or two isa browns (for reliable eggs) and a couple of something else for variety.
Re: chickens wanted we went to a breeder's auction in toowomba to get our wyandotte and light sussex, the prices were pretty damn high. We paid $70 for a three light sussex chicks (had to give away the one rooster), and $60 for a trio of wyandottes (again, had to give away the rooster) .. we took one each of the light sussex and wyandotte and gave one each of them to a fried. With a small yard, we think it's great to have some really nice chooks as well as eggs.
