We would like to start and introduction forum to introduce new members and to give them advice and help in finding their way around

• Things like
  welcome
  reasons for Forum
  role of moderators administrators etc
  how to seek justice etc
  Do a search on a topic before posting to see if this question /information has been posted before.
  Private mail is disabled at the moment along with RSS feed. We had a bad spam attack and had to cancel Pms.
  Your first few posts will be moderated, this is order to cut down t6he spam from shoe salesmen and other spam (currently 20-50 posts a day)

How to add a photo to your post - that took me a while to figure out.

To do this right click on the photo you want to include in your post.
Go to "copy image location" and select that
If that is not a choice go to "properties" and you may get a dialogue box. Copy the "properties" location to your clipboard. The URL mostly should end in "gif" or "jpg"

You are really publishing here, and a picture is worth a thousand words.
A Google image search will give you hundreds. Some cannot be reproduced due to copyright restrictions. They will usually tell you this.

When you return to your post select " Img" in above tool bar. You will get "img][/img". Your cursor should be between those two "imgs". You then just paste in your copied image location. Alternatively you can paste in your image location, select it, then press "Img"

Now can someone tell me how to post Video and U tubes to the site?

Hi all - as a "newbie" I would be most interested in all the suggestions above. I am having trouble putting your little smilley faces in my messages. Are the words that come up in the draft turned into faces when it is published? Sorry to be so basic but with help I too could contribute. Thank you to the people who do this stuff to help others on the forum.

This may be off topic and completely undo-able...

But I would love to see a 'library' of information on specific topics, because sometimes good stuff gets buried in topics that started out with a different thread. For example, I would love to see everything people have ever posted about say, growing onions, in one place. I noticed a good thread about the-newspaper-and-sand-for-growing-onions-trick and it was in a topic about mulching vegies. I know we can always search, but how good would it be to have everyone's hints and tricks about individual things all together?

Good observation Grahame.

There is "simple" solution to your excellent proposal.

We each keep on a privately held file the posts/information which are of interest to us.
A copy and paste with original posting information. When an issue appears on related
issue it is an easy process to relocate and post that contact/information etc.

That way we have many doing the task based on individually well understood interests.
I have used this to great effect on another forum.
It does require being aware of how you organise information. Not a bad thing in itself.

The issue then is at "what stage does a topic become one you should focus on?"

Hello guys,

it's not advice to newbies but for admin or whoever run this forum.

I have(PHPBB 2) programming forum in my lanuage(Serbian) and had similar problems with spambots untill I installed add-ons. The first add-on is Textual confirmations. It didn't really worked I never knew why as it is bassicly the same add-on as the second that I installed I think it is called Visual confirmation.
What they do? They add question - answer protection to the forum registration and that offers you nice way to exclude spambots.
I put just three questions in my forum and it worked as I have not had a single spambot post or registration since then.

First question is "What is on the logo of the site?" And as its fox and its local forum I approved only variation of the word fox in Serbian. You can implement something similar here.

Of course this doesn't protect you from the manual registration by human, but add nice layer of protection.

There is a lot of good info on this forum I agree. Often it is scattered. I tried to start just-a-chooks thread with everything to do with chooks in it. That lasted a week. Perhaps a different forum design? So i guess you have to 'search and troll though lots of posts like the rest of us. Unfortunately the search function on this forum program can't be sharpened so you can target specific things.

Moderation is a drag, i get her nd have to work not play so of late I have started using
View your posts and View new posts and View active posts
Highly recommended for newbies.
The view active posts will bring up recent active discussions (This needs to be longer than a couple of days as it is at present
The View new posts will let you see the last couple of days recent posts.
The View your posts will show you if anyone has replied to your posts.

If you have a question on plants, horticulture, agriculture, permaculture or any other type of culture ask (You could try Google first if it is aphone number?)
If you have an opinion post it.
If you find something interesting you would like to share-- then share it.

You will find these Forums very friendly and very helpful. (Except on rare feral occasions )
People have strong opinions about, Organic V Chemical; The Future (we are all doomed); Politics and the environment.
Such stong opinions are to be treasured as they inspire us all to clarify and write our ideas down.
There are no grammar or spelling police here. Some are writing in a second or third language. remember that and don't be too critical of difficult to understand posts. If YOU don't understand ASK for clarification or more information.

The experience of other people will sometimes give you insights and ideas that you will not find in books.

There are places here to flog stuff ( or give away) that is relevant,
but please, porn, nikies and viagra sellers are given no mercy. Their URLs are banned and they are reported to the Spam conrol people so they will be automatically binned by people such as Google.

I really don't understand what you are saying. Possibly because I have not taught myself how to properly use the PHPBB program( and or use computers?).
In my case i figgured that Apple had the best clearest system so that was sure to win out on little green dots on a grey screen.
(I also bought beta because it is the best system :sigh. Nowdays I have to learn to push different buttons and keep up with exponential change. I know it is your kind way of keeping us away from Alzheimer's and thus you paying for our care
You see, the alphabet generations should have taught us 1945-1950 "Baby Boomers" (That is, Baby Boomers sans Government Grants) how to program.
Thus enabling us to keep the internet going, and meanwhile you earn some money for our miserly pensions and your golden handshakes/parachutes/country properties.

What would happen if you pressed the "global" button?
I have always been tempted to find out (I always thought it would be shouting and therefore ruder than usual )

Advise them to put their location on their info bit explaining that from a gardening/climate perspective it is very useful for the givers of advice, that it's not 'cos we're stalkers or anything
