I planted a Red Cedar (Toona ciliata) about 17 years ago - we have over an acre bordering on rain forest aand it was native to the area until logged out. The adult tree has produced a number of self sown seedlings - one is in an area that is semi OK but will shade the southern end of our orchard as it matures and will provide shade from the western sun. However 3 others have germinated in the surface roots of the parent hard up against the pool fence and are likely to push the fence over not to mention play havoc with the pool.

The parent is in it's winter mode and lost all its leaves but the seedlings are fully leaved - can they be transplanted readily? They are between 3 and 5 feet high. Guess I'll loose them anyway as the pool fence ones will have to come out , it's just if they can be saved and relocated to more suitable parts of the property it would be a bonus.

I would say that now is a good time to transplant. Would be like a bare-rooted fruit tree I'd imagine, and now the days are getting longer and the soils are warming up...

Even though the seedlings haven't lost their leaves like the parent?
