I actually think that the plants sold here as officialis are the russian ones, misslabeled. I bought root cuttings from green harvest and I don't think that it is the officiale form. If you want to start them from seed look at horizon herbs they have the most awsome variety of herb seeds, but look up at AQUIS weather the seed is allowed entry.

Most organic gardeners, not to mention permies, have russian comfrey and are usually willing to share root cuttings. Maybe check out some local gardening groups.

The Green Harvest comfrey I have didn't flower this year. The Diggers Seed variety flowers heavily and produced seed (no errant germination yet). The native bees like the comfrey flowers so I remove them when spent.

I have some comfrey, no idea what sort, except that it's prickly, low-growing, purple-ish flowers with big, dark leaves.

I harvested two shopping bags of leaves off one plant (donated for a comfrey salve making demo just a couple of days ago). Apparently mine were the only leaves looking lively about this time of year (probably because I tip whatever worm liquid on the plant whenever I have a bit too much ... comfrey likes that! ... that, and my resident pet grazier grazed them ... a lot, in Autumn lol).

Anyway, I know this plant is fairly old, because it's a root-cutting from a plant that has been in my family for decades. Welcome to a cutting, if you still need some? No idea if it's Russian tho.
