Hi all, I am looking to retrofit a portable and was wondering if anybody could suggest alternatives to plasterboard? I must line the internal walls of the portable due to the need to retrofit insulation to meet building codes (bleh). Cheers
What's the reason for not using plasterboard (as this may affect other choices)? What is a portable? Will it be being moved?
I lived in a 1700's circa farmhouse and when we remodeled we found Lathe and Plaster with no insulation in the walls, which in itself was amazing since the house held in the warmth very well over night. I personally would go with straw bale (without seeds) and use natural plaster over that. It would cover your insulation problem, can't catch fire, and looks great! You can naturally dye the last plaster render layer to take care of any color aesthetics. You can also work with someone making the straw bales to adjust sizes needed. Good luck!
all i can suggest is ply wood; burnie board; or hardi-flex a cement type rendered product with good insulation qualities even villa-board[cement type like the hardi-flex] (the flex and villa come in 4.5 and 6mm thicknesses), none of them are terribly light in weight, unless you source a very thin ply wood. for us we are not lovers of gyprock/plaster board, as termites love to tunnel through it to get to some wood. len
G'day DJ So, you got the portable? For the ceiling, try: Acoustic Strawboard Ceilings And for the walls, try: Enviroboard Both of the above claim a certain degree of 'environmental' credibility in their production, together with relatively high 'R' values (of course, the extent of these claims will be dependant upon matching them to your own needs). I also imagine that they would not be a 'cheap' option. Cheerio, Mark.
Hardboard is not a bad option too - the heat used to make it creates the glue from the timber itself, that holds it all together (it's probably got a big carbon footprint though). Ply, even eco ply, uses some fairly nasty chemicals. Not sure about the bamboo one though.
One of your links was broken Marko... https://www.solomit.com.au/products/acoustic-strawboard-ceilings.html
Jeremy, looks like you did one of my tricks (thanks for the earlier correction, pebble. DJ, try: papercrete
