University Students are finding it hard to gain Industry Based Learning placements in rural areas. The skills are getting harder to maintain and the working population is aging and many are about to retire.

How are rural communities going to compete for limited numbers of professionals ?

What incentives can be put in place now to help students gain essential work experience in rural settings ?

Should Council's collectively try and employ a student on placement?

What do rural communities need to do to attract, train and retain professionals?

Permaculturalists generally have kids that are aware of environmental, ethical and incoming economic issues which lead into these fields.

Unless these professions are upheld these services many people take for granted are dumbed down and societies start to go backwards.

Great thread Callum, I wish that the USA was interested in forward thinking but alas it is not.

I would love to see people realize that without a reduction in "modern farming techniques" and a return to true soil improvement, that the agriculture base will collapse. If we don't have students here take a real interest in soil improvement, the nutritional values of foods will continue to spiral downward until everything consumed will only be empty calories. It is imperative that the rural communities first recognize the need for professionals that have real knowledge in soil improvement and management.

These communities will have to give some real benefits in order to attract new blood, such as housing, salaries that are competitive by way of money paid or a package of benefits that is at least comparable to other locations. Incentives could be opportunity of research, development of new methodology and seed bases, along with housing and other necessities for a life that these students see as living a good life. I think that if a community offered the opportunity to grow in knowledge, perform research that could lead to published papers leading to advancement in professional recognition, a workable salary and housing, they would be able to attract the particular people they were interested in bringing into the community.

Young people are more into computer based thinking today so good, high speed technology bases are going to be needed to make the community be seen as someplace to really consider by the up and coming professionals.

It is sad but becoming more fact every year that the dependence on technology is a big factor in the dumbing down of the world populace. More and more the young are lapsing into dependence on technology to perform even the simple tasks that folks my age know how to do manually. The young people I deal with on a day by day basis do not see this dependence as a problem to be dealt with. I am very concerned that we are at that point which Albert Einstein feared most, where dependence on technology creates a situation where the population becomes to dumb to survive with out technology.

There is an increasing gap between rural techno communities and non-techno communities. One is genuinely falling behind and the other is also genuinely falling behind but in different ways. Either way it does not look good and somehow we are going to need to induce a correction for both. I reckon a good theatre production would do it like the one being discussed elsewhere in this forum (I forgot who was talking about it - something about a new thing called a "Community Return")

I also watch the global financials, and the inter-national conflicts that seem to be popping up everywhere lately.

It just may be that a world wide financials correction is on the way. That will limit the amount of techno that communities have at their disposal.

It seems that there are a lot of countries now dissatisfied with the US Dollar being the currency of trade, should this change happen again (as it did when the US Dollar took over from the British Pound), lots of things we think of as normal will change.

An event such as that will make it even more prudent for small communities to find ways better than the current norm to deal with waste. Those of us of the permaculture mind set are in a good position to offer solid solutions and more cost effective methods than the current ones.
