Good. I'm happy that people, including yourself Kerri, do understand that a utopian existence is in fact 'hard to achieve'.

Please allow me to quote a little of the original Utopia by 16th C luminary, Thomas More:

...a little farther beyond that, all things begin by little and little to wax pleasant; the air soft, temperate, and gentle; the ground covered with green grass; less wildness in the beasts. At the last shall ye come again to people, cities, and towns wherein is continual intercourse and occupying of merchandise and chaffer, not only among themselves and with their borderers...

Source: More's Utopia (courtesy of Project Gutenberg)

    And this by Oscar Wilde:

A map of the world that does not include Utopia is not even worth glancing at...

Source: Sreenan (1998) Oscar Wilde's Socialism

I (and many others) believe a utopian existence is achievable, for all of us. To this end I have devoted what's left of my life to ensuring that someday it becomes a reality. Welcome aboard, and bon voyage.

Kerri, Utopia like beauty is in the eye of the beholder,or in this case the creator. My small property is smack bang in the middle of broard acre farming....wheat/sheep when I bought it there was a house some shedding a few trees and a lawn which consisted of weeds and I knew very little about permaculture or farming.....But i did have a Dream.. which I mentioned to my neighbour who looked at me as if I still believed in Santa.Eight years latter I now have a thriving garden with a orchard,a almost totally renovated house, new fencing, water tanks, and I think the locals no longer think I'm stupid........Yes utopia is difficult... but if you don't try, it will never happen.....Many have tried, some have given up, but many have succeeded....I have planted and grown two crops on my block without owning machines, although I have a small tractor it's too small, a local planted them for me and latter I helped him.I also do some work for the Local Shire on a casual basis and with the Pigs I get by....Like you, I went into this for the lifestyle and freedom..not to become a millionaire......Keep it up, I know you will succeed!

You have my brain ticking over now as you are doing what I am plaining to do, you are just a little ahead of me.

how about worms? they will use up your waste, and help your garden, and when you are set up you have 3 products you can sell. bottles of worm juice, vermicast, and the worms themselves. Also make a good food source if you are to put fish ect into one or more of your dams.

Peter, I think that you have found your utopia. Mine is waiting just around the corner. We feel as though we will be half way there just moving to Stradbroke, because it is a beautiful place to hang out and we have the vision of our utopia and we just need to implement some of our ideas and then ...... the gods willing .... hey presto...!!! Can you tell I'm excited?

Diane, that is a great idea. I have seen people selling their work juice at the markets. Not too many yet, but I think it is one of those things that will take off. Talking about the dams, I am hoping to have some yabbies in at least one and we want to set up an aquaculture system for some fish. So the worms will come in handy for catching the fish and the fish heads will make good yabbie bait. Wins all round. Thanks for the idea.
