Kuru - a disease similar to variant CJD (mad cow disease) that is spread through cannibalism. The incidence of mad cow disease was increased by the practice of using 'leftovers' from the slaughter of cattle to manufacture high protein feed for other cattle. Quid pro quo when it comes to eating humans. Based on PNG cannibalism and the occurrence of Kuru, together with all the other diseases that humans tend to carry, I certainly would not wish to put one in my mouth.

It may not be the philosophical view you were after, but IMHO it is a reason as to 'why not'.

Also did you know that cannibals do not eat clowns – they taste funny.

Why shouldn't it be... its great having opinions on both sides of the fence. A lot of what you say makes me glad im a permaculturalist, i'm sure a lot of what i say makes you glad your not.

Without your non-permacultural(ish) replies, we wouldn't have debate to the degree we have in the past week or so. Its all good!

trust you to ruin my fun by giving a sensible answer

i say no for two reasons:

1 - no, actually, I'll keep that one to myself just for the moment...it's very close to beer o'clock
2 - if some of the PC heavy weights on this site saw my feeble attempts at PC they'd laugh themselves silly if I claimed to even know anything about the subject let alone that my feeble attempts at PC even vaguely resemble PC.

i saw mollison doing the 'global gardener' series on tv when i was in uni and have been head over heels ever since - i bought land for the sole purpose of living that dream...successfully or not, time will tell

Just don't try to farm humans as part of your PC efforts, or atleast don't harvest them.

They haven't laughed me off the site yet and my efforts so far are underwhelming.

I bred a couple of little humans, but I generally let them free range :)

Cooperation, not competition. Communalism, not communism. If it is any consolation, I reckon you are doing a great job - at least you can hold a decent (well, it did get a bit inane there for a while) thread of dialectical discourse.

    Re: the great vegetarian tragedy

Well Dalzieldrin, it be fairly obvious why we don't farm humans for meat.

First, the containment facilities would be fairly expensive. Probably like a zoo monkey cage. BIG dollars. Cattle on the other hand need only a few strands of wire to be contained and a couple of workers per thousand head to maintain.

Feed would be a problem. Ya would need to grow cattle to feed the farmed humans to keep them healthy. You need only look at vegetarians to see how unhealthy and lethargic farmed humans would become if ya just gave them fruits and veggies. Breeding would also be difficult for the farmed humans if they weren't fed meat, one needs only to visit vegetarian forums to see the problems the veggie girls have finding virile men. So instead of farming humans, it be better just to farm and eat the cattle as ya get more meat off them anyways.....

    Re: the great vegetarian tragedy

Dalzieldrin, you could argue that a lot of humans are already labotomised but from a practical point of view humans arent very good at turning protein and carbohydrate into meat - partially because we only have 2 legs to it takes a lot of continuous muscle use to stand up and balance, we are also not particularly fecund and take a long time to reach sexual maturity - all in all not a great sp. to farm. Then again there are neiche markets - i tried a traditional roast equine sausage in northern italy and it was awesome, i went back for seconds even after i found out what it was, im suprised we don't ever get that in Aust.
I have only ever met one person who has eaten human - in PNG i think he was identifying new plant spp. in the mountains and he agreed it did taste like chicken (probably the best conversation stopper i have ever heard!) - at any rate i am sticking to the fettucini alla pollo.

I have heard father Bill say on several occasions that this is what the high rise buildings on the Gold Coast are for - containing the food source in them when the nation rises.
