    An instant classic political cartoon.

    Saw it on Truthdig.com.

Mr. Fish sometimes comes up with classics such as this:

I interpret it as an indictment of the perceived superficiality surrounding many environmentalists notion of what constitutes action. Labeling themselves as "tree huggers" while not taking concrete, on the ground, actions beyond donating money and for someone else find solutions.

Merely "hugging" trees is not enough to stave off wholesale environmental destruction, our relationship with the natural world must become deeper. A move from tree huggers to tree planters, if you will, is necessary if we are to convince the rest of the population -segments of which do not care for sentimental arguments about loving nature- of the necessity to protect, expand, and work with the biodiversity we are losing.

The man is speaking to a tree which has (as far as we can tell), no way of knowing that it will be meeting its end. The irony is that the lumberjack believes the tree should have known, even though we are the only creature in the decision making process. Humanity is the only part of the equation that has any power to stop the destruction brought upon the natural world by ourselves.

In other words, it is not that the trees should have known, but it is the humans who wish to be the protectors of the trees that should have known that a much deeper relationship to the ecology of the planet was needed.

At least that is how I interpreted the cartoon.
