Hi, We are exploring different options for separating goats from the gardens during the growing season. It is important that the options be very low cost, effective, multi-functional, and pleasing to the eye. Any thoughts? Thanks, judi
judi - i have this dream at our property - where we have started setting up our permaculture systems - of a garden surrounded by a strawbale wall. they look great. are relatively cheap. leave you with great possibilties - it would be important to keep bales 6-8 inches off the ground (just use some recycled timber with stones as infill. if you use a nice earthen render - this would help keep price down and you could make as high or low as you like. just an idea....
just to add to dan suggestion of a strawbale wall, you mentioned the need for multifunctionality... well, the thermal mass of such a wall would obviously provide a variety of microclimates. here in monticello, new mexico where it gets pretty cold we are seeing that figs planted by the walls of the adobe courtyard have good fruit setting only to the height of the wall. above that where the wind and cold air hits them the fruit is all dried up and dead. same thing with the new growth on olives... ::
Not sure where you are or what climate we're talking about here Judi. does Agave americana grow there? Now there's a multifunctional goat barrier. Some of the prickly pears too but probably need to go thorns.
