I brought myself a video card to go into the computer. Plugged it in and turned the computer on....nothing, the screen turns off. I've tried it with the moniter plugged into the card...nothing.

I pulled the card out and started the computer then installed the drivers for the video card.....nothing....

When I've not had the new card plugged in and restart the computer it goes into the setup and says it has started in safe mode as something wasn't right with the CPU the last time it started.

I thought these cards just had to be plugged in and once the computer was on I could then install drivers etc???

Am hoping someone has some ideas as I know bugger all about computers and really don't want to have to take it all the way into town.

    :(

not sure i can help much cornonthecob,

b ut once the vid card is plugged into the mother board and all connections are made ie.,. to monitor, then reboot the machine and when it says it has detected new hardware get to the screen that has the question 'have disk' slip the disk in and then click that and it will find the driver needed. but it should run with the m$ generics anyway.

don't think you will be able to boot up without any vid card in, can do without a sound card.

was the old card had it?

about all i can think of without actually seeing waht is happening then i may be of no help anyway.

Thanks Len..unfortunately that's what I've tried....the computer starts, the moniter turns on then turns itself off...so I have a blank screen...I have no way of knowing how far it gets with the startup.

The monitor works fine..it's only when I put the new video card in.

    ok c.o.t.c,

    out of my depth now.

but could it be a compatability problem?? wouldn't think there would be such a problem. did you buy the card new? maybe ask the person you bought it from what could be the problem?

anyhow very interested to here when you get a solution so keep us updated.

the only other thing i can think of is as tjhere are 2 types that i know of that is:

    agp

    tgp

maybe say agp in tgp slot if that is possible??

and might be if machine is much older that modern new card may not be compatable might be something to do with the bios??

just as a thought can you get into safe mode with new card in and see the desktop? if so maybe load drivers then??

if not put oild card back in then load new drivers and try new card then again??

apart from that my friend you may need the services of a rip off sorry a good techy, me i'm just a common agrden type gardener who tries to fix all his won probs with quiet a lot of success i might add, so i don't get our bank account drained. chuckle giggle huh

i'd like to know how it goes

    have a good one

Once when I was in a remote canyon in new mexico my veggie diesel ford escort wouldn't start up. I walked to the nearest house and asked the little old lady if I could use her phone.
She vehemently declared, "There's nothing as useless, as a car that won't start!", and invited me in.
Of course, she had never known the frustration of having a computer that won't start... I mean, you can sleep in the back of a broken car but what are you going to do with a broken piece of shit computer? You know they design this stuff not to work for very long. sigh...

My old video card is integrated into the motherboard...apparently I need to switch this off somehow before plugging in the new one. Bugger if I can find out how to do that.....

go into the BIOS (Press F1 at bootup) and turn off the onboard graphics.
this should work ok and next boot up it should except the new card.

or maybe you need to change a jumper setting on the motherboard.
    not likely though.
A jumper is an on/off switch on a motherboard, Your users guide should explain various settings and how to adjust them, the're little plastic things you need tweezers to pull them out.

ah but then they wouldn't be able to charge you $80 an hour to fix. trade secrets.

well that is also a lesson for me, up 'till this new machine all others had add on cards. so need to be aware should i ever have to change a card.

lol Len..I have to admit I was a bit nervous going into the BIOS and doing it...as all I was told was go into setup and find it and change it....still cost me nothing.

My computer is a few years old so I didn't actually replace a card as the video things was built into the computer motherboard.....I almost feel like I'm being dragged kicking into learning here!

    :)

Well that is bloody marvellous that you were able to get help from Len, and figure it out yourself, and not have to pay$80/hour or whatever to press a couple of keys. Good one!

mmmm dunno i was under the distinct impression that it was chickadee that did the solving i did very little if nothing at all to realy help in the end.

but yes people having to pay to have something fixed that the computer should be able to tell you exactly what to do does stick in my craw a bit as does the fee of some 80 plus bucks an hour. after all everything in a computer is nippon clipon. like one techy said "if we told you that we'd be out of business" says it all hey. at least as a mower mechanic i earnt my money outside of such a criteria.

anyhow my reward is as i try to help i learn.

Yeps Chickadee had the answer but to be honest it was Pootle sending me some web links that pushed me into the right area. If I wasn't so lazy and it wouldn't have cost me a small forutne I would have taken it into town and gotten someone to have a look at it.

Still....tis nice to know people are prepared to offer help and stories about little old ladies and run down cars. Though......I wonder where the dog was in all of this Richard? :)
