g'day Gordon and Hanneke, nah never night crawlers they are that by name and nature come nightfall they crawl away. ours would have been a mix of red wrigglers and tigers, all worms need warm earth to function, most all but go dormant in the winter. we changed our bins every 7 months usually, we kept a lot of worms in them, when emptying and then starting a new one we would save worms and some material from the composted bin, and also add more of those worms to the out of service bin, liked to add a good couple hands full of worms every say month to the in sue bin. you don't need much space to keep 4,000 warms going. we added them in the active bin all the way along also helps to make sure the top of the out of service bin doesn't dry too much the worms like it moist. we ended up with lots of worm wee in the bottom of the bin with some sludge, we used all of that as well. the advice we got from a worm farmer was keep away from the night crawlers, for the reason stated above. len
