Firstly, I hope not to offend anyone with this topic, particularly being my first on the forum. I will keep the details brief to avoid any discomfort to anyone. It does invlove the unwanted bits from a poultry processing plant so if you feel it may offend you please do not read on.

Problem... how to treat and reuse up to 2 to 3 (or more) tonnes a day of chicken offal from a poultry processing plant.. Basicallly feathers, insides, feet and beaks.

The material is currently going to landfill as there is no local processor that can deal with this type of material.

Given the right treatment it would become an invaluable resource, particularly in the sandy soils of WA.

IS anyone aware of a processor/process in the eastern states that deals with this type of material??

    Cheers

    Braidwood

    Braidwood,

Excuse the earlier fun but I believe a meat processor could turn it into 'blood & bone' using a heat process.

They may not be able to take it on due to cross contamination of facilities. I am not sure on this one though.

    Cheers

The Charlie Chicken sounds like a good idea for a small business....maybe a community based one. The real world laughed at Charlie Carp to start with and now it's well establised in the market place.

    yummy.

There's an outfit here in Oregon (USA) that uses crab processing wastes, mixes it with sawmill waste (bark & sawdust), and composts it. They got a grant from the state some years back to get it all running

The compost smells a little funky, but the plants love it.

    Hi Cathy,

Here's the link to their website.
    https://www.neutrog.com.au/index/home

Funny thing though, a rep from their company has featured as guest speaker at our garden club on several occasions and they said they used CHICKEN CARCASES from poultry farms which would otherwise be left to decompose on site. He went into a great deal of detail re the process. However their website make no mention of it. Maybe they don't consider disclosing this fact would make their product attractive to the general community.

I'm on my soapbox now so I think I'll email the company and ask them to clarify these claims.

I've requested further clarification on the matter and will post here when I receive a reply.
