Anyone ever used them? ...for slowly degradable garden edging...or in their fire places, anything at all? Building houses? Play blocks for children?
There used to be ads for devices that took wet newspaper and mashed them into bricks, to be used as fuel. There used to be ads in the back of those 70s back to the land magazines for plans on how to build them, and I remember reading an article about how to build one.... but I can't remember where I read it..... It looks like a good idea if you have access to news print in quantity. Check, um, Backwoods magazine, maybe they have more info. C
I think they were originally introduced as a wood replacement for folks in their pot belly stoves...might have developed from the rolled paper logs... I'm thinking holes in the bottom of an icecream container, push in your paper pulp, squeeze out the water and let dry like a mud brick... dunno...just thoughts really. No idea how long they would last, but maybe they could be sealed? Might make interesting edging...
Ya know RF, that is exactly what I was talking about. The plans are out there. https://www.greenshop.co.uk/catalogue/0506/Household.pdf and, on a really great site, listing thousands of interesting things worth looking at, things used by the Amish: https://www.lehmans.com/jump.jsp?itemTyp ... uctID=5788 If you weren't ignoring me, you'd get to see all of this interesting stuff! Wow, and some of my posts have information you might be able to use! C
THANKS, C! I'll have to check into those sites! They also build Papercrete houses here in the desert. Sue
Nah not as yet... Have plans and materials,,,, just not the time. Nearly have the house 7 more days..... Then xmas... Then paper brick maker, then garden,,, then Aquaponics... NOW THAT I HAVE MY KIT... - Cheers Joel...
I think I might have a bit of a fiddle about with this over the holidays. Am not thinking of making the actual press...just hand pressing the slurry and modelling. If you are interested Dan, I will let you know how things go. Thanks for answering my question...was looking for someone with experience with it. Looks like I might just have to consider it an adventure of sorts. Tis all good. BTW - I love your latest emoticons!
May I suggest if you are gonna use them for fire and stuff, that you have a hole in the middle of your blocks, as this lets the air flow better, allow better flame action Also you may wish to add some saw dust to your mix, I read somewhere that this helps to make the bricks last that little bit longer and also give the blocks a better smell when burning.
CINVA ram I've thought about using a CINVA ram to make paper bricks, like this one... https://www.hahaha.com.au/rammed.earth/cinva.htm
Paper bricks If you're interested in a manufactured version of the newspaper brick maker, they're available by mail order from: "Magnamail" PO Box 880, North Ryde BC, NSW 1670 Tel (02) 8874 8777 Fax (02) 8874 8780 for $36.90! I've also seen one on ebay (where else).
paper bricks Oh bugga that!! I saw one just this weekend at a garage sale.....$5. For that price it wouldn't be worth the time and effort in making one.
