that looks similar to Portulaca oleracea aka common purslane
a very common weed species here. chop and drop is difficult
with it because it persists from fragments.

is it edible like common purslane?

it is the same genus but different species,a common name "chickenweed" a mat forming like carpet so there is another name called "shanghai carpet"
attach bees, flower bloom at noon and of course it is edible. in thailand it is the popular cover plant in lamon garden, perennial flower and fruit garden.

looks like a very nice cover crop for the warmer climate people.

the purselane here doesn't show up until later in our season so
other weeds have a chance to get going beforehand.

the decorative moss rose is a nice plant for later summer color
and does withstand the heat/droughts at times, but alas it doesn't
come back as easily as other weeds and soon fades from the
gardens. even with the many-many tiny seeds the plants can
have. i have a friend who had a nice patch of moss roses that
reseeded each season but they were in a more moist place than
what we normally have and also some shade. it was always a
    pretty spot.

There are another micro clover plant(nitrogen fixing) named trifolium repens the smallest legume that suitable for your climate.
and other one is irish moss.both are substitute grass lawn.
    first pic. is trifolium repens.
    second pic. is irish moss.

oh, no, i don't need any ground covers here, i have
clovers growing already in places and i'm actually
going to be removing the white clover because it does
    not combine well with strawberries.

my favorite low growing ground cover here is a variety
of thyme. it is only a few centimeteres tall and has a
nice scent and purple flowers. you can see it in the
    middle portion of this edge:

it is a common enough plant but i suspect it will not do well in
    tropical heat and moisture levels.

good luck with all of them! :)

my information about them being problematic is from a friend
who grows them in FL, USoA and he's said that they tend to
have fungal issues from getting wet too often.

he grows them in containers so he can move them out of
    the rains.

if you have a more arid place than he does perhaps this is
    why...

i'll be interested to see how it goes.
