Hi, I've been reading Geoff's websites and forums for a few years, and I just got around to getting an account here. Currently taking Geoff's online PDC and loving it. I have two acres of woods in Greensboro, NC. The house is plopped right in the middle, so getting enough sunlight for gardening is tricky. Thanks, Thom
Greetings Thom and welcome, Hope you're enjoying the course! Are you planning to do any selective thinning to let more sunlight through? Are your woods in a "climax forest" state? What's your first project after the course going to be??
howdy and welcome. i'm not sure what i'd do if in the middle of the woods like that. chop n drop gets reversed. does it make more sense to see if you can find another spot nearby to work with instead of removing trees? or perhaps take some portion of funds to give to charities to help reforest other places to offset what you might be removing? just kicking around ideas...
Thanks Bill. I will probably do some selective thinning. Geoff suggested that I consider coppicing some trees. I have a lot of very tall pines, and they like to fall down, so I've got a bit of cleaning up to do. I'm thinking that wood chips would make a good mulch and get a start on improving the soil. I've used logs to create terraces on the side of the house that has a steep hill and gets some sunlight. Not sure where this PC adventure will lead me, but I'm taking the first steps.
Tall pines! Would make some great building materials for outbuildings and such. I've been stuck using old telephone/power poles. Got clay? You'll be busy after your PDC is done!
