Hi Everyone, I enjoy watching the documentaries on this website but I came across this one that talks about Monsanto patenting pig DNA. This means if you want to raise pigs you have to pay Monsanto. This is crazy. Why don't they just patent the human heart and charge you a fee for that? Mind you if they tried they would probably get away with it, they just about own food now. https://topdocumentaryfilms.com/patent-for-a-pig/
yeah well they can just get @#$%^/. It's about time people stood up to these thugs. The world has gone absolutely insane to allow this crap to go on. I mean, does anyone really believe you can patent DNA. Oh sorry Monsanto are above morality.
Sadly yes, several US courts do. However, they can't patent heirloom pigs, and those are the kinds I plan to raise. Same goes for any other animals. All my chooks are heritage & heirloom breeds. The goats I am planning on getting, again, heritage breeds...it's just safer and smarter.
I knew about heirloom and heritage seeds but not livestock, that’s good to know. Do you mean breeds such as Sussex hens? We have 7 chooks in our suburban garden -3 Australorps, 1 Lansham (very noisy) and 3 Sussex. One day when we have acreage and we are able to raise birds for the table I would definitely go Sussex. The birds are big and meaty looking and the eggs are huge and tasty. But I digress..
Okay, here's a little more for the pile. Monosanto is patenting DNA and I see https://www.extremetech.com/extreme...pt-images-stored-in-dna?utm_source=feedburner Sounds like someone wants to tag something/someone on the DNA level.
I am not familiar with that breed per sey, but I believe yes. Personally, I want to add (as an example) "Buckeye" chickens to my flock since I moved the cats inside the house. Or a better example would be since we are looking into goats, I am planning on acquiring "Oberhasli" which are "Recovering" from being on the "watch" or "threatened" animal listings.
Scary and sickening. Edit - My wife just pointed out that this is straight out of the movie, "Bladerunner."
Funny how life imitates art. Makes sense tho. Cinema makes people aware of possibilities where the human instinct is too understand.
I agree that patent protection of pig DNA is laughable, but human DNA has been patented too. I don't remember all the details, but I know that various companies own patents over the breast cancer gene and other bits and pieces. So can you sue them for damages when 'their' gene malfunctions?
Patents [edit] Filings [edit] In 2003 Monsanto filed patent applications with claims on breeding techniques for pigs.[124][125] Greenpeace claimed that Monsanto was trying to claim ownership on ordinary breeding techniques[126] and the filings became the target for demonstrations in Germany.[127] A UK news article indicated that "the practices it (Monsanto) wants to protect involve identifying genes that result in desirable traits, breeding pigs to achieve those traits and using a specialised device to inseminate sows deeply in a way that uses less sperm than is typically required".[128] In Europe, the European Patent Office rejected some claims as relating to an essentially biological process excluded from patent protection,[129] but an application with claims from this set of filings was granted in 2008 and was later revoked.[130] In 2007 Monsanto sold Monsanto Choice Genetics (the Monsanto entity driving these patent filings) to Newsham Genetics LC of West Des Moines, Iowa. The transaction was completed in November 2007, and Monsanto is no longer in the swine breeding business nor interested in patent filings on pigs or pig breeding. - wikipedia Is there a current Monsanto directive around pig breeding? Here is an excellent resource with all information regarding gene patenting and related issues. https://www.genome.gov/19016590
the Supreme Court invalidated Myriad's claims to isolated genes https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_for_Molecular_Pathology_v._Myriad_Genetics Don't know if you guys caught up with Friday'snews - US Supreme Court has held that naturally occuring sequences of DNA is not patentable.
Yes I did see that. On Friday afternoon I was listening to ABC radio and they had a scientific patent lawyer on highlighting the implications of this decision. He reckons that unless pharmaceutical companies can patent isolated genes and produce new medicines and treatments, then they will not do it as it would be economically unprofitable for them. Time will tell I suppose.
Unbelievable It is a serious concern. Can't believe how censored this information is. Most people are just not aware.
Greed is the fuel of most everything companies do these days. It has become a sad statement of the "average human being" that they do not want to know or fight for what is supposed to be their rights. In the USA, I have watched the "average being" simply letting their freedoms go by lack of action and failure to recognize that they are loosing their freedoms by that lack of action.
I fully agree! But on the other hand people (from an African perspective) are not being informed that these "criminal" activities are happening. Most people around the world are not aware that this is happening or what the implications of something like this is on their freedoms, because their leaders do not give a damn about them! All the leaders see is financial gain for themselves in the short run, and hence big decisions with regards to basic human rights are being made without properly informing and explaining these to the masses! (lol! I'm getting angry as I write this!) In Africa promises are made of job opportunities for the poor, and they fall head over heals for a simple wage to just feed their families, without realizing that they have given away their basic rights. But the masses are waking up slowly! Poor people all over the world are realizing that they are being taken for a ride by the big companies, and I fear things are going to get messy in the next couple of years as more and more human rights are being sacrificed to satisfy the greed of individuals! The collapse of the greatest civilizations in history was due to this fact. Where there is segregation in society; rich - poor, etc. and the masses are the ones that get the ugly part of the stick, such a system will collapse sooner or later.
I fully agree with you grantvdm, the world as a whole is headed towards another period of great anarchy. The bright side of that is that, apparently, it seems to be the only way civilizations start over and that is really what needs to happen at this point. Here those in power are adamant about removing our guns, same as Hitler did right before he became dictator of Germany. Only those who fear an uprising have a great desire to remove weapons from those who would rise up and depose them. The most comical thing I see about it all is that these same power hungry folks constantly spout how "Christian" they are. Apparently these idiots have a great desire to do the wrong thing and say it is "politically correct". As the Joker said "What this town needs is an enema", only it really applies to the world overall.
Wow! This forums have been really crappy over the past few weeks! Could not do anything... Glad they changed to a new location! Seems to be working on my Google explorer, but internet explorer still not functioning well... An enema would be great the world over Bryant!!
