    Afternoon to you all..

    Putting this out there ...

We have a little herd of very precious ORGANIC dexter girls and calves, who are much loved ...

Yes, where is this going! Well basically we are wondering the same thing ...

We bought our cows with the intention of milking them and growing for organic meat. But a year is a long time and things have changed in our lives. A brush with cancer has seen us completely re-evaluate our lives and most importantly our diets. We, the committed meat eaters, have become raw vegans and cannot see ourselves going back to eating meat. We had wondered if the lure of slow cooked stew and dumplings on the wood stove would suck us back in when the weather got cold, but it's not happening.

So then we consider why we keep our cows. We love them dearly, brush and talk to them daily and nurture them lovingly with homeopathy and minerals to overcome any problems which might occur. They have responded with a trust many say is rare. Both calves and cows jostle for their rubs. It's a sight to see. We have 160 acres, so plenty of land. But for what? Cows need to have calves, which yes, we could sell those for meat or as organic milkers. But when you think about making an income, part of the consideration is believing in what you are doing and the satisfaction which comes from that.. Here-in lies the conflict. With not eating meat we are no longer attracted to growing it for others.

Then we come to our land and what will we do with it! We're leaning towards creating a series of hide-away/run-away organic and sustainable retreat huts for overworked, stressed or burnt-out city types ... a place to detox and breathe! We've toyed with keeping the cows to feed them, but are now leaning towards turning this land into more of a nature refuge ... thickening our forest etc. To keep cows we would need to spend considerable sums installing more fencing around each hut and the grazing lands or time moving the electric fence (which is what we have done in the past, but this is not a long-term option).

The realisation of this place in our journey has been a while coming - no-one likes to part with their much loved animals. But reality is if we are going to make the retreat happen we need to start planting trees and work in this direction. And it takes time to find a home for a herd. We would prefer they stay together because they are so happy together.

So does anyone want to buy - or know of someone else looking for a lovely ORGANIC dexter herd (five mature cows (four pregnant to a sensational proven bull) with strong blood lines and looks - three pure, two grade threes - and two pure girl calves, a likely short leg boy and a soon to be steered boy) ... guaranteed organic and very friendly.

    Putting it out there!

Perhaps keeping them would save cutting the grass while waitig for the forest to grow :?:

    Hi,

Sorry for not getting back to you - the cows sold within a few days and because I'd listed them in a few places, I forgot to come back here. Good luck with finding what you're after urbanus.

Milifestyle - would have loved to keep them to eat the grass, but unfortunately with organic tick control, it's vital to keep rotating through paddocks. Having done a year of moving an electric fence it came down to choosing to continue to do that or put in some expensive permanent fencing or choose another path. With no real need for meat for milk, the cows lost :( ... The grass will be fine. This property had been overgrazed for twenty years before we came, so it's enjoying the rest - hence the reason we were only running 5 adult cows on 160 acres. Time now for the grass and weeds (aka Peter Andrews) to help rebuild our fertility.
